I have to say I'm sadly leaning towards the side of disaster...The End of Evangelion is simply a brilliant film that transcends the anime genre itself.

There is no need for anything further.

Whoa.

Whoa.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. HOW are they going to do this. I don't care who is involved, I just can't see how they can possibly pull this off.

So many questions:

1. What is the plot going to be? Will this be just a live-action adaptation of the TV series and/or the movies? Or something completely original?

2. Where is this going to be distributed? Are they making this for a North American release, or will it be made for Japan first? English or Japanese?

3. What actors could they get for the film? Are Shinji, Misato, etc. going to be Japanese? Obviously they don't look very Japanese in the animated version.

I swear, I would have thought today was April Fools or something. This is just so far out there to me that I can't even get my mind around it.

Evangelion touched me in a way that no other TV show or movie ever has - I probably feel more passionately about it than anything I've ever watched. The thought of this movie bastardizing my perception of the originals is just too much for me. I don't know if I will even be able to watch this when it comes out.

I suspect that this will be primarily for the Japanese market first. It is the way of most things ADV underwrites, and would make the most sense, since there would be more of a market there for it.

As to why? Probably to milk more out of the franchise, which has been Gainax's biggest.

As to what it is going to be about, who knows? Right now, other than WETA, we don't know who creatively is going to be involved with it.

Jerry Bruckheimer's Evangelion
(otherwise known as EVA 2K4)

A swarthy group of pilots who normally use mech drillers to drill oil are called upon to do their patriotic duty when a series of 'Angels' begin attacking Earth. These CGI monstrosities first level cities, until Jake Lloyd taps into the power of his mech and successfully fights off an angel. This then sets of a chain of events whereby there is a car chase (complete with shakey cam as the passenger pleads with the driver to *not* drive through that fruit stand). Bruce Willis is the 'kid's' emotional distant father, who pushes his son for no apparent reason.

The teaser poster: "Kick some Angel Ass... this Summer..."

Mr. Voice says:
One Boy... One Destiny... One hope for Mankind...

(my satire is hopefully dumb and transparent enough for everyone to see this is a joke)

Honestly, who cares if WETA is involved? That's like saying, "WOW! Wild Wild West -- featuring FX by ILM!!"

"Jerry Bruckheimer's Evangelion" -- that's GOLD. At least it didn't say, "A Jon Peters production."

I don't expect them to be advertising the film using the WETA brand, but I thought it an interesting aside, it's better to know its WETA than the company that did the FX for Star Trek V :)

Oh, I agree -- but I think we're all much more interested in the creative team behind the story. This is an announcement to confirm that this is to be a "high profile" project.

"Evangelion -- featuring character animation from the folks who brought you 'Lost in Space's' Blarp!"
