Film Noir - LIST (1 Viewer)

Many of the PD (public domain) titles are available from various companies. I've simply listed the company of the version which I have (and I've always tried to stick with some of the better ones - Image, Kino, Roan, VCI etc., unless there is no alternative). The titles that are (or were) available here in Region 1 are bolded with DVD after the year. Titles NOT available here in R1 that are available elsewhere are marked in red (e.g. DVD R2).

I have also included a number of titles that might not necessarily fall under the strictest definition of "film noir", however, they at least hit the noir target, containing many of the elements often associated with the genre/movement - some of which fall into the closely related crime/gangster/police procedural genres. Although my interpretation of "classic film noir" spans basically from 1940-1960, I have included a number of titles from the mid to late 30's as well as a few from the early 60's that in my opinion, qualify as noir (be it legitimate precursors or post noirs). I have listed the studio next to the titles that I am aware of -- if you can help fill in the blanks or if you notice any errors, let me know and I'll update the list... Thanks.

The Big Sleep is the best of these IMO. I absolutely adore that movie - one of my all time favs.

Anybody know if we'll ever get a "Studio" version of 1952's excellent
"Sudden Fear" (with Joan Crawford)?

This dark film noir would look terrific on a restored DVD. But I've read where the current Kino edition sucks to high heaven, PQ-wise. (And I wouldn't spend the ridiculously-high price of almost $27.00 that Amazon wants, even if it *were* a good transfer! )

The Kino VHS isn't really *too* terrible...considering.

But a re-worked DVD would be most welcome. Joan is spectacular in this movie.

Has anybody got this on DVD, btw? ......

tho nobody asked, i can vouch for Roan's Cause For Alarm which is on a double feature disc with Orson Wells The Stranger.
both are solid PQ wise.

Sadly there were only about a dozen or so new releases (and some of those were Alpha...), since I originally posted this last May as well but I have added quite a few titles that weren't on the original list. Hopefully Fox will change all this soon.

One minor point - it would be nice if the Criterion of Fritz Lang's M also included the 1951 remake, but sadly, it doesn't.

Little bit of noir news...

A few more titles have been added to the list including releases of The Great Flamarion released by VCI as a DVD-R. Also soon to be released from VCI is Bury Me Dead (1947) an Eagle Lions film possibly as a double feature with The Chase (1946) - presently I believe, only available from Alpha (great film but a dreadful presentation).

For anyone interested in replacing their copies of Suddenly and Too Late For Tears, Link Removed is releasing these on May 18th and May 25th. One can only imagine (hope) that these versions will be superior to what's currently available. Actually, I have a Platinum version of Suddenly which is satisfactory but the TLFT is an Alpha which isn't the greatest. I'm gonna take a chance on both.
