About DLP Front projectors (1 Viewer)

I´m planning to buy a DLP front projector for DVDs, X-Box and PS2 but I am new in projectors and I have a couple questions for someone wise.

1. Can I have burn-ins if I play video games on DLP projector. How about LCD projectors? I have only found informations about burn-ins in RPTV and I don´t know if it´s same with front projectors.


2. I am sitting about 12 ft. from the screen. How large can the screen be so it´s comfortable to watch. I don´t want to look constantly from right to left to see what is going on on the screen.

3. Does the room have to be totally dark to enjoy the picture. The projector is 600 lumens.

I will take a crack at this but I am no expert.

DLP's do not have burn in issues, I am not sure about LCD's

The general rule of thumb is 1.5-2x the screen width but you might be able to go slight larger or smaller based on the quality of your projector, screen etc.

600 lumens is pretty low so you may find a need to keep the room dark. My current proj. is 500 lumens and I have to have absolute darkness but my unit is very old.

I am planning on ordering an Infocus X1 next month, they run about $1100 onlin and have 1000 lumens, 800 in film mode. I will have 12 feet to work with as well and am planning on an 85" diagonal 16x9 screen. That breaks the 2x rule but I can adjust if I need to.

I also expect to need it pretty dark to watch.

Thank you for your reply. I was also looking at the Infocus X1. I noticed that you said your screen was 16:9. I thought X1 was only 4:3. I´m thinking about Sharp XV-Z91E but the X1 is a very sensible projector if it´s 16:9.

Well, it´s already sencible but if it´s 16:9 that´s even better. That´s what I´m trying to say.

The X1 is 4:3 however it has a 16:9 setting the blacks out the top and bottom so you can use it as a 16:9 projector. It doesn't "sqeeze" the image however so you don't gain picture quality like you can with some systems.

That is fine for me as I the picture I have seen is really impressive for the price... I think it is as good as my friends well calibrated Tosh 65hx81 on DVD and HDTV.

The only way a digital projector can "squeeze" the image is to use an anamorphic lens attachemnt. Any time a 4:3 digital panel is used for 16:9 material the full resolution of the panel will not be utilized.

Thanks for the replies but I am going to buy Sharp XV-Z91E. It has great performance and it is not too expensive.

I think Toshiba has a 16x9 DLP coming in june with a list price off 3999.00 I expect it to street lower than that and i think its the first DLP with 16x9 AR under 5K

I think there is a yamaha 16x9 dlp coming in June that should go for around 3,000. I have a pany L300 and can sort of stand it with some light, if I put my ceiling light on it washes out really bad, it definently is better when its really dark. I use mine only for movies and video games, if I watch TV I go out in the other room, if your room is big enough you could keep it in the same room as the pj and use it for your tv watching during the day/lights on
