The Onkyo TX-SR500 is currently available at J&R for $149.88. Yes, it's refurbished, but the price is practically 50% off of the "street price" for this unit. Comes with an one year Onkyo factory warranty. Within that one year, you can go to Onkyo's website and purchase another 2 years of extended factory warranty for a little over $30.00. So for well under $200.00 (not including shipping cost), you have a highly rated "almost new" receiver with 3 years of factory warranty. Not bad.

Be warned, however, that some of the Onkyo TX-SR500 units have a subwoofer channel bug. Do a search on HTF for more info -- there's a long thread about it. I believe they've agreed to fix them, but it might be more of a hassle than you want to go through.

Kevin,

Frankly, I was just looking was a stereo receiver, and since I had a good expereince with my previous Onkyo, what the heck. With future possibility of surround sound to boot. Originally, I decided to cancel the order, but for almost 50% off, I figure I will go thru with the puchase.

I will purchase the extended warranty, however.

Thanks for the "heads up" on the subwoofer bug! :emoji_thumbsup:

Yeah, I was shopping around too and found the offer at J&R. I just read some reviews on the SR500 and 99% of them were positive excluding one negative from a guy who owns a pair of BOSE speakers ::rollseyes::. I just couldnt resist! Danny, just so you know, there was one guy that replied to that thread you linked (one of the most recent, yes, I read the entire thread :D) stating that he does not have the LFE problem. Well, Ill be recieving mine tomorrow and Ill see if it comes up. Either way thats one kicka$$ deal from J&R! and also thanks for the info on the extended warranty.

Well, I read most of that thread also. It seems only a small lot of receivers have this bug, which does make sense: It is absolutely unfathomable that something like this should go on undetected in a one year old receiver.

I can't afford this right now :frowning:. This is one hell of a deal. That would be the perfect foundation for a bedroom setup...

If you call their customer service line (1-800-806-1115) and inquire about this receiver, they may tempt you with an additional $10 off. If not, ask for it.

I just ordered this way & got it for $161 shipped.

The LFE bug was long enough in the past that I would think that "factory refurbished" means that they would check for this problem.

UPDATE: The one that I received from JandR in this deal, does not have the LFE bug.

It's working quite well, in fact, and has distinctly better sound in the rear/surround channels than the older Onkyo which it replaced. Either the 20% greater power made a bigger difference for my surround channels (seems unlikely), or else the new amplifier design (I think their marketing term is "W.R.A.T.") is more effective with the sort of load they represent (small acoustic suspension design).
