I gave some thought to purchasing these somewhat unknown films that were released recently as part of MGM's slate of "Midnite Movies" series. For the $16.00 cdn. that I paid it was a good bargain - $8.00 a movie. And to top it off MGM included a featurette with both films. Pysch Out (1968)has "Love and Haight" that ran approx. 15 mins. (I did not actually time their length-just guessing) and included interviews with Dick Clark (executive producer) and some others involved with the film (Bruce Dern for one). I found it quite interesting. The same carries over on The Trip (1967)which has an interview with Roger Corman (Director}.The featurette is titled "Tune In,Trip Out". Also included are:

Pyschedelic Film Effects
Psychedelic Light Box
American Cinematographer Article
Theatrical Trailer

Much more than I ever thought would be included as they are usually barebones releases. Music of The Seeds and The Strawberry Alarm Clock are on Pysch Out and has Bruce Dern, Jack Nicholson,Dean Stockwell and Adam Rourke. The Trip stars Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern. Both are widescreen (1:85) and are anamorphic. Anyone with a passing interest in that period of time should look into this dvd - it is an interesting insight into the Haight/Ashbury area of San Fransisco. I also bought Muscle Beach/ Ski Party - harmless fun from the early '60's starring Frankie Avalon and the gang.

It's a pretty good double bill.

THE TRIP remains a very interesting film. Dern is excellent. Hopper says "... man" more times than Joe Pesci says 'fuck' in GOODFELLAS.

PSYCH-OUT is okay. Dean Stockwell is unintentionally hilarious throughout and Nicholson's pony-tail is horrendous. A must-see! :D

The transfers are excellent and the extras add great value.

I love the 1967 cheesefest The Trip! Saw it when it first came out. And, of course, I ordered the Midnite Movies MGM DVD.

Actually, some of the stuff in The Trip is pretty accurate, and you can tell that writer Jack Nicholson did his research. The terminology is correct. ("Hey, man, keep it down. I've got an ounce of pot in the house." And the tab Peter Fonda scarfed was 250 micrograms, a common 1960s dose. Yep, the filmmakers knew their stuff.)
