I want to get a 6.1 reciever, but I was wondering if 6.1 will work for my situation. If it will work would you recommend 1 or 2 rear speakers. The diagram shows the speakers in red and the rear speakers in green(6.1) or blue(7.1). If the "blue" option will work, does the placement look about right? I am planning on using bipole speakers on the sides and on the back as well. Is that a good idea?
(not included in the diagram, but in the set up are a center channel and a sub)

Jed,

I’d move the couch further from the wall and go with the blue. The red with the rear so far to the side is not the best idea. Plus, I prefer the sound of rear speakers being actually behind me.

I would arrange the rear speakers symmetrically in relation to the couch – in other words, move the right one closer to the green center.

I have my couch right against the wall and the timing of
the surrounds sound fine to me.. Just my opinion FWIW...

Hi Jed:

We all have things to work around and experimentation is really a must for most of us.

Nothing works exactly the same for all rooms.

As Brett said he's againts the wall and seems to be fine with that arrangment.

I think Wayne P's suggestion, "might" being the key word here, be a better aproach.
This dose not mean it's the only way. Just experiment with the locations of your speakers and couch, along with the proper volumes & delays if needed.

Also, Dolbys Site maybe of some help with ideas for your situation. There are prefered rules, but we all don't have the perfect room to work with.

Ain't that the truth!

Good luck and experiment is all I can add, besides thats part of the fun in this hobby! ;)
You will know when you hit it right, it will all come together sound wise for you.....

Regards
Geoff

Thank you for your reply's. Do you think that the Bipoles would sound good for both side and rear?

If we all had perfect rooms it sure would be easier to
implement this stuff. My room is only 16.5' long and I just
don't have the "room" pardon the pun, to have my couch 3'
off the back wall (I wouldn't be able to walk in the room!)
So for me the only option was the couch up against the back
wall. My speakers are mounted about a foot down from the
ceiling on B-Tech Mounts I can pan side to side or swing
up and down. I keep them aimed straight out not tilted down
not panned side to side. And it works fine for movies in my
room. The other thing to consider is that people may be
sitting in other locations so there really isn't any perfect
way to get them aimed at every listening position..

Dolby's rules and DTS's rules are fine if you have a dedicated
room that's perfectly rectangular with no openings anywhere!

We live in the real world though :)

Dolby dose show a number of different ways you can try to place your rears and surronds.

You might take a look their for some alternate ideas.

As far as the Bipoles in the back "rear", I am not a fan...
But many like them and seem to be happy with the results they achive from them.
Could be our rooms forced speaker placment.....:frowning:

It's a personal taste thing I'd imagine along with other variables.

Sorry that probley dose not help much :frowning: and hopefully someone can add something more for you dealing with Di's, Bi's, or Tri's on side and rear.....

I would suggest 6.1 should be fine based on the diagram. The only mod I would suggest if you have the flexibilty is to try the side surrounds just a touch more forward but it looks like the door on the left would forbid that. I've been finding things a bit more seamless like that in the installs I've been doing.

My vote would be for forward radiating effect speakers unless you will use ProLogic alot.

jed, is there a window on the far right wall (in that pic)? If not, try placing the TV on that wall... rotate the whole seating arrangment 90 degrees clockwise. Of course, I'm almost sure there will be a window there. :frowning:

There is no window on the far right wall, but the room will "look" better this way. What I mean is that this a family room/HT room and it was a compromise between my wife and I. The main concern of mine was the left side surround being too far off to the side, but then I talked to the sales guy at a high end home and car audio/video store and he said that it should not be a problem because you can adjust each speaker's volume individually. So, hopefully he is right.

Jed, you might find the following link helpful as it deals with a lot of speaker issues and questions.
