8ohm, 4 ohm, what is the difference? (1 Viewer)

I am just starting to get into home theater and I am looking for a new speaker setup to get me started. But I currently have a pair of 4 ohm speakers hooked up (Cerwin Vega MX250) and some 8 ohm speakers from a Sherwood Dolby Surround Kit.

I know that I want to replace it all with some quality speakers but I am wondering if in the mean time is there a problem mixing the 4 and 8 ohm speakers together? Does this hurt sound quality or the receiver?

I tried to search for information but the search was disabled.

Please educate me!

impedence mismatch can damage your receiver, check out that article, i found it a while back and thought it was informative.

the difference is basically resistance the receivers works with. 4 ohm speakers will have lower resistance that allows more current to flow, thus over-heating the receiver if it is not efficient enough to keep up with with the increased current.
at least that is my understanding, im new to this audio stuff too

depending on how you have your windows text properties set up, it may require you to use the bottom scroll bar of the browser to view the right half of the page.
