my father got a second stroke (1 Viewer)

he got his first last june ( 2002 ). the result was the he got skinnier, a little bit hard to speak and he only got about 90 percent control over his right hand ( hard to write, but still write ). he looked okay, he babysit my son a few times when we visited him last december, and he could still drive his car.

a few days ago he got his second stroke, and since he lives half a planet away from chicago, it is really hard to communicate with my family. he is now in a hospital, but mom in law told me my dad just called her asking about whether my in laws got USA visa or not ( they want to visit me for my graduation ceremony next june ). he sounds fine, but i still doubt what i heard since anything could happen to my dad. at least thats what i have in mind.

anyway, my question is that what would be the BEST way to prevent the third stroke. in my opinion, anyone who got a two strokes doesnt get to live long...i am really depressed now. well, at least i can share this on htf, my favorite forum ever.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Felix. I lost my father about ten years ago to complications of multiple strokes. You, your father, and the rest of your family are in my thoughts.

fortunately my father is still alive, i just want to know the best way to prevent another stroke. he lives a healthy life, he doesnt eat red meat almost to the point of being a vegetarian, and he does exercise everyday. he quit smoking a year ago.

so when i heard he got another stroke, i am confused. why?

last december, before i returned to chicago ( for school ), he told me that it is really hard for him to let me go, simply because of my son, his only grand kid. my father had never left his children for a vacation, and he always want to be with his children all the time; which is not possible. it was him who told me to go get a degree from a school in united states. so, he told me that he was afraid that his depression might shortened his life ( he is 54 ). he then went on, telling me how he wanted me to live my life, telling me to raise my son, etc.

he has a plan to come to chicago for my graduation ceremony. but my mom doesnt want him to come to chicago, because of his health. the problem is, if he were not given a chance to see his grandson again, he would be more depressed!

i dont know what to do.

Well, there's not much you can do, really. If there is something that can be done, I am sure the doctors will make it top priority.

But as far as prevention of another stroke is concerned, he should have as many routine checkups as possible. If they can detect a blocked blood vessel soon enough, there are many treatments.

Perhaps if your father is well enough to make the trip, he can get a second opinion from a doctor here in the U.S. Also, the anticipation of his seeing his grandson again may lift his spirits.

Todd started to hint at a couple of options for your father. First and foremost I would recommend that you contact a specialists office to see what they recommend. Maybe you should check on www.webmd.com to see what they recommend. There are drugs that you can take to help with the clotting of blood within the vessels of the brain but your father would need to see a doctor to be checked out before they would even recommend or give you a prescription for anything.
