I keep on telling him to just sign up here but he won't, but don't hold that against him.:D

He's leaning more toward systems that don't come with a DVD player because he has one and is going to buy a new one eventually anyway. What is good out there in the $600 price range. I have heard good things about JBL and Onkyo HTIB systems. Do you all agree that these are good to look at? Any other suggestion?

Thanks guys,
George

1. go to Onkyo's website www.shoponkyo.com
2. become a member and receive 10 points(dollars)
3. go to factory reconditioned
3. buy a TXSR600 for $321.75
4. buy a SKSHT500 for $180.00

wont be disappointed. these products had small blemishes on them and have been fixed. Trust me, they are as close to brand new as you can get.

$321.75 + $180.00 - $10.00 = $491.75
Free Shipping makes it nice too!

Plus, after you bought everything and registered it, you would be able to pick up the rear center channel for next to nothing using your Onkyo points

If he is wanting a HTiB because it's easier to set-up & operate (don't blame him--HT is getting pretty complicated) then a dvd/receiver combo would be called for.

Like this new Panasonic. Don't know what the speakers sound like though. And check out this Bang & Olufsen lookalike HTiB.

as Rob and Pablo have already suggested, IMHO your friend really should consider a separate receiver and speaker set, especially since he's got a DVD player and recognises he'll upgrade that some time later. once upgraditis hits, with a "separate" system, it's easier to upgrade, say the speakers, and continue using the existing receiver (or vice versa), than with an HTiB package.

at his budget he can do a reasonably decent setup, if it were lower then I suspect not and HTiB without DVD player would be the only route, but since he can (go "separates"), he should.

(purists please don't flame for my liberties in use of the word "separate", I know full well it technically means separate processor and power amps... :D )

Rob TT,

I just checked out that Idea you had for the refurbed Onkyo products and it has the TXSR600 for 429$. The SKSHT500 is 240$ as well. Am I missing something? Its definatly under the reconditioned section.

Aaron, you have to join Club Onkyo, and then login using your username/password. You will see the better prices. I've considered the set myself a few times, if I had the cash.

I think Rob's idea is fantastic. The only hitch is refurb, but it's too small of a hitch.

Take him to Costco:

Toshiba DVD $79.
Pioneer 511 $199. or less
Advent Book shelf $150 for 3 pair!
KLH 10" 120w. Sub $99.

So just over $500. you got an fairly good sounding system that will blow away any box system!
