Oh my. Anybody seen more info on this? They also mention an 18" Brahma on the regular website. Any similar Tumult plans?

Good god that sounds bad, but I wonder what exactly they did to make them so much more powerful. The things they listed don't seem like enought to do that to a driver. Those things sure are friggin expensive though.

The price is nuts, but for car audio competition where #of drivers is important this thing should kill other subs.

If you read the fine print it says "Please allow 8 weeks for deliver of this hand-built monster."

At least it doesn't say "Please allow 8 months for confirmation of delivery of this VC inspected monster."

Interesting:

56mm of Xmag, 33mm of Xsus. Seems to illustrate what Dan W. has said before, that the cone suspension is the current bottleneck in the advancing state of the art.

I suspect they've pretty much tapped out all the travel they can build into the standard cast baskets available, short of moving to a flat diaphragm to let them raise the spider one last bit. I predict we're going to see some new basket castings before Xsus gets much past 40mm. Too bad if it's true, because it likely means more expense.

The driver sounds like a recipe for disaster. The motor can out throw the suspension by 23mm each way. That's almost one full inch. Wouldn't it be really easy to damage a driver with this recipe?

Yeah, the spider/surround sure better be glued well. But I'm sure it's clearanced for plenty of swing past Xsus.

By designing for throw past Xsus, they're just going for raw displacement over linearity. After all, distortion isn't a concern in SPL shootouts.

Well I guess if you want serious, SERIOUS extension out of
a driver it's simple.. You rip off the magnet structure and
throw the spider out the door.. get a basket that can take
2 inches of throw or more and hook it up to a high speed

Unfortunately for Servodrive (and the rest of us), cones still need suspension, no matter what kind of motor they're driven with...

One thing about servo motors, though: they have that whole Xmag thing pretty well sorted out--how does infinite Xmag strike you? Posted Image

True they do need suspension no getting around that.. But
they don't need the spider to control cone movement so that
eliminates a big part of the problem. Surrounds today are
at the peak of the technology I belive and I don't think we
are going to see much more out of the typical high roll
rubber/santoprene's used currently. I think if we ever want
to see a sub that can have a one way X-Max of say 3 or 4
inches then a radical rethink and redesign will be in order.

Amen! I'm hoping soon to prototype a driver that makes use of just such a rethink. I'll share all I can on this forum when I'm able.

Right you are! It seems. I thought since the sevo motors
dampened the movement the only suspension needed was the

Brett,

Would suspending the outer edges of the cone the way the voice coil is supended, via magnetic field, be possible? "Float" the cone via MF, instead of with rubber/foam?

I'd have to say doubtful.

I think it needs to be simple and it could be... Piston in a cylinder sounds like a good idea.. What do you do for
suspension though.. "Piston Return Springs" ??? LOL!

This whole "piston" idea is making me think about using something like a car engine, where the suspension is the crank, and the crankshaft would be the motor like in the servo drive subs. You could have a 12" cone/piston moving 6" total inside a chamber thus giving you your bass. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this displace a SHIT LOAD of air?? Or maybe I'm totally off base here?
