here is a bit of Socom 2 news taken from the IGN forums
Will be in some PS@ magazine next month.

Quick SOCOM 2 article sum up.

-Larger Levels some set in Albania, Brazil, Algeria, and Russia
-Better Graphics
-Online Ranking Ladders
-Buddy/Ignore Lists
-Progressive Scan supported
-Spectator Mode
-Voice Chat in game lobbies
-Better security to prevent cheaters/glitchers/codebreaking
-Socom servers will still be up and running with Socom 2 getting it's own improved servers.
-Artillery implacements
-Landmines that can be deactivated if found before stepped on.
-Two new online game modes BREACH and ESCORT
- relased date = nov 2003
Oh one more thing = FREE!

I will now fall into a catatonic state in which I do nothing else but dream of playing socom 2. Nov. can't get here fast enough.

Easy purchase for me. Above all else Sony and Zipper Interactive need to make sure the servers are as stable as can be before release. Even more importantly, cheating/glitches needs to be a big one on the priority list of things to prevent (which it appears it already is )

Looks like the Socom Clan will be a making a return. I'll definitely be reporting for duty .

The game is free? How? Is it like a "buy the Network Adapter, get this game free" thing?

Free as in no subscription fee.

Well, Sony's making it, so I guess I assumed there would be no subscription fee anyway. Oh well.

Cool. It's been some time since I've played SOCOM, but look forward to part 2. I had a blast playing online with everyone here.

I hope so. Wouldn't be the same without the chef or the captain in the bright yellow jacket .

Adding larger maps will probably make this a more sniper friendly game. I'm sure our fearless clan leader will love that.

Forgot all about that. That was cool when you got it. Always wondered what the victory conditions were that got that response.
