1984-original score restored on DVD (1 Viewer)

1984 with john hurt and richard burton-one of the most underrated films here in the US(it won some britsh AA) was
released to my surprise with the ORIGINAL score. The movie was made(and considered so good) that a 80's pop group was
called in to supplement or create a new score. Now don't get me wrong-I liked that score-but this new disc(with great
transfer)has addded a new meaning to this movie. It was not noted on the film case(probably for rights issues). I highly recommend this movie as intelligent and well acted
drama which is timely in todays political climate. On a second note I am hoping that 1968 film the POWER by george
pal in on the horzizon in dvd land.

I haven't seen this one yet, though I just read the book. Is it faithful to Orwell's book? Is it in 1:85 or 2:35?

Jesse,

You're correct -- the only music on the DVD is the orchestral score by Dominic Muldowney. The Eurythmics track isn't present.

I like Muldowney's work, but wish MGM had seen fit to give us both scores. As things stand, I'm holding on to my (pan-and-scan) Image laserdisc just to keep a copy of the Eurythmics score.

The aspect ratio is 1:85. This movie was filmed in london in 1984-it is fantastic,a classic. The transfer(I owned the
vhs and 2 laser verisons)is definitive. The retail price is
19.99 and can be bought on the web for 14.99. Faithful to the book as much as a 2 hour movie could be...in some ways
better and some ways not...more better than not-you will not
go wrong for this one. It's the best version I have ever seen since the movie theater(me and 2 other people) which I
went twice to see. If you really like the movie you can also
buy the cd(highly recommended)soundtrack which I think has
some great cues not in this version or you can buy the pop
version(which is good to)

Ive seen the 1956 version with Edmund O'Brien, and that is very good, too.
but Ive read that the Orwell estate had it pulled from distribution in the 80's...for reasons unknown.

I really appreciate this film and feel that the non-Eurthmic's soundtrack does the film better justice.

It's almost like "watching" the book. the actors are so well cast and the sets are so well done, it's as if the book has "come to life" looking and sounding almost exactly as it did in your mind's eye when you read it.

My biggest complaint with the movie is that in room 101 there is a tele-camera on only one wall...where in the book a point was made that there were *4* such tele-camera machines...one on each wall adding to the sense of "big brother" oppression in the cell.

I recently snapped up 1984 and was very surprised to hear the original score. I ran this film here in Melbourne on its original release where, for the first 3 days of the season it was the Muldowney score. The distributors pulled all of the prints and replaced them with the Eurythmics version. It was apparently a marketing decision to go with the Eurythmics as they were so damn hot at the time and the powers that be thought they would be a bigger draw for the youth market than the "A" names in the cast. Whatever, I thought that both had their merits. But my preference is towards the original. With regards to the DVD, MGM may not have been able to licence the Eurythmics score from BMG.
