We're With the Band
a dream band draft

In the spirit of the cast/crew draft...

A dream-band draft. Everyone drafts band members, a producer, a photographer, an artist for their album cover, a writer to do the Rolling Stone cover story or Interview magazine piece and a director to shoot the video for the first single. After the bands are drafted, you tell us your musical genre, album/song titles, etc, and we vote.

I'll pass on this, for I don't know enough of the criteria you selected. Thought this was drafting drummers, vocal, bass players, and guitar players. That I'm in.

Well I like the idea, and normally I'd give it a shot (although I do think you might want to limit it to the band itself - different instruments, a singer, lyricist, etc., since I agree most people wouldn't know things like a photographer). But I couldn't do it anyway, as I'll be at a conference all next week, and will have limited access to the net.

As I said: ideas welcomed. We can limit it to just drafting 5 or 6 musicians and a songwriter. George: I can save you a spot and you can send me your picks and alternates.

Angelo,

I'm not leaving until Monday morning. So if this off the ground, and we've got clear slots by Sunday night, I can pm you my picks and plenty of alternatives.

My suggestion would be:

Singer
Lead Guitar
Rhythm Guitar
Bass Guitar
Drums
Keyboards
Unusual instrument (pick both the instrument (anything not one of the main categories and a player).

Anyway just suggestions.

This is what I'm currently thinking.

So as to not limit anyone's construction of their band, we'll draft a number of "musicians". You don't want a bass player, ala the Doors, that's your call. You want a dobro player instead of a keyboardist, fine. Don't need a singer? You don't have to have one.

This is what I propose we draft:

Musicians 1-6: you arrange them as you like
Songwriter: if your songwriter is one of your musicians, you have another free pick; if not--if, for example, Carol Bayer Sager is penning your tunes--that's a discrete pick
Producer: could also be someone in the band, providing you with another free pick
Writer: choose someone to interview the band for Interview magazine
Director: of your world-premier video

You'll pick your band's name, musical genre(s), name of the first album and a track listing if you like.

Imaginations ought to run wild. I'm still open to ideas.

Still waiting on 3 more players.

Please vote on preferred draft order: 1-8, 1-8 or 1-8, 8-1.

Please vote on "vote or no vote?" following the draft.

If we don't get 8, would folks like to proceed anyway?

Sure, why not! It sounds like fun to me, I don't know why it doesn't to everybody else.

(I am leaving though, so I'll PM you with my first pick in case it starts abruptly)

Well, here goes nothing.

We are going to proceed on a 1-n, n-1 schedule, n = the final number of participants. We'll start with the people we have now, and add accordingly. I'm happy with 8, or less, or more.

I will table the "vote/no vote" issue and raise it again in the midst of the draft. Vickie's vote is noted. I'm leaning toward "no vote" myself, but will entertain all arguments on either side of the issue.

I will try to remind folks of their turn. Feel free to PM me your picks at any time.

We will start now and allow others to join in.

billie holiday (lead vocals)

Cary is up next.

Didn't discuss timing of picks, but 12 hours seems reasonable to start. PM me picks anytime you like.

Cary: will Edward be sporting the red-and-white axe?

George picks Jimi Hendrix on lead guitar.
