If I remember correctly THX=75db and Dolby Digital=85db. Will calibration at either setting achieve exactly the same result just at different volumes?

If your using the test tones from the receiver I am not sure which is correct. I know that the Video Essentials DVD is 85 and Avia DVD is 75. If possible use one of these DVD's instead of the receiver test tones.

Kirk is correct - VE is 75 dB and Avia is 85 dB. I think the important thing to remember is balancing all the speaker levels is more important than the absolute volume at which this occurs.

If you balance all your speaker levels to 75 dB with VE, or 85 dB with Avia, that same Master Volume setting will also provide Reference Level playback when you spin a DVD. Since the test tones on these discs are mastered at 30 and 20 dB (respectively) below the typical DVD level, Reference Level will provide bass SPL peaks in the 115-120 dB region (with the speaks set to Small) upon playback, and is therefore generally considered too loud for most enthusiasts. 5-10 clicks under the Reference Level Master Volume setting is where most enthusiasts enjoy comfortably loud playback.

Since we're on the subject, REF level for Sound&Vision HT Tune-up is 85 dB, right?
