Besides it being audio art/history?

I have an opportunity to purchasr onr, but I don't think it's worth more than a few hundred bucks at this point. Am I wrong? Why would I want to pay more than say 500 for it?

I don't know. Do you admire and seek high fidelity audio, or do you just want the latest equipment?

The player was $5000 two years ago, and is still a fantastic stereo SACD and CD player that is truly built to last.

Why would you think it's only worth a few hundred bucks now? The few used models I've seen were all $2500-3000.

Manny, Adam is right. Have you looked at an SCD-1 up close? Better yet, have you heard one? Forget the point about it being a piece of history. It is, but it is so much more. Look at the build quality -- 58 lbs.! Furthermore, give it a listen. It is a first-rate CD and SACD player. If multi-channel SACD is not important to you and you want an excellent CD and SACD player, get the SCD-1. I have the very similar SCD-777ES, and it is a tremendous component. I've had it for two-and-a-half years and have absolutely loved its sound.

For those audiophile who are not into multi-channel (which is most audiophiles), the Sony SCD-1 is still worth its weight in gold. Consider this, the latest high-end CD player from Music Fidelity as covered in this month's Stereophile magazine is also a stereo-only SACD player that sells for over $6000. So, in my opinion, the SCD-1 is definately worth more then just a few hundred bucks.

...balanced outputs, maybe? You might consider that you could get the Chinese Xindak new for 1400-$1600. Best wishes!

Excellent points! I am not a big fan of multi-channel music (not more than two, anyway), nor do I care about having the latest and greatest, and I am aware that Sony usually over-builds most first-gen product, as my S300 DVD player proves.

I just wanted to get a feel for what the community thought about this player. Apparently it is as good as the write ups say it is to garner such firm responses!

Kieth, I want to incorporate it into my 2-channel system. Have you compared your player to a TT? What are your thoughts?

I can speak to this. I have done this with an expensive VPI rig and the SCD-1. The turntable wins on good LP pressings (audiophile and the like, notably anything from Classic Records), but the SCD-1 wins on everything else. The vinyl rigs are superb hirez devices, but they are a lot of work and maintenance IMHO. Nevertheless, I will be buying one soon.

My recommendation: If you want great sound and convenience, go with a Super Audio player.

Well, you guys have actually turned me around on this thing! I always thought that it was strange that people were spending many thousands of dollars ((2 to 5K)) for these players to get "analog sound" that was readily available via vinyl.

But if you take into account that a LOT of LPs really do sound like crap and yes, setup can be a pain, and the whole ceremony I need to go through to play a freaking LP.. it would be nice to just pop a CD in the player and let it rip!

Not that the whole ceremony isn't neat when time isn't an issue. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO EVERYBODY!

I'm guessing the SCD1 will just plug into my tube setup? Here's a pic of the system...the speakers aren't pictured but they are folded horns.

I am SO getting it! I'll post pics of the complete system when I'm done!

Keith,

Actually, I don't listen to CDs at all on the two-channel system, I use the HT for more casual music listening and I go through the good ol' Sony S300 DVD player. I bought one of those 300 CD SOny jukebox things, (CX350...I think) but it sounds soooooo bad I just use it to store the CDs...kind of like a really expensive motorized lazy susan ::sigh:: The DVD player is atually quite OK sounding on music, but not for critical listening.

Here's the stuff I have:

HT: B&K Ref 30, Outlaw 750, DefTech BP2002, CLR2000, BPX in the rear, Tosh TW56D (the last of the standard Def widescreens...bought it in 1995 or maybe 4 gotta check)
Marantz LD player, Sony DVP-S300, JVC-S-VHS, DirecTiVo modded to 100+ hours, Monster HTS-5000.

Music: Bottlehead Foreplay preamp, Bottlehead Paramour 2A3 flea amp, The Hornshoppe Horns, MMF-5 TT and Hagerman Bugle phono stage, soon to be replaced with Bottlehead Seduction tube phono stage just because. Hagerman Bugle is nice, however especially considering the price.
