Actor/actress who you thought of when you first heard there was going to be a film version of a book?

Example:

I thought of this while reading the introduction of the characters in The Godfather. It went into detail about what Michael, Sonny, Fredo and the rest looked like. Even though Al Pacino will forever be associated in the role and with very good reason, I couldn't help but think of Joaquin Phoenix when the character of Michael was described.

Mario Puzo described him as looking a lot different than his older brothers who had cherub-like faces while Michael had almost feminine features, not that Joaquin looks feminine, it's more like he has sharp features.

I'm not saying anyone should remake Coppola's film, it's just fun to think of who would play certain characters if it was being made today.

There's a character in Elmore Leonard's Be Cool, a sequel to Get Shorty, that had to have been created with the thought of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson playing him in the movie.

Not quite what you are looking for, but I will say that the entire cast of Jurrasic Park was an exact match for what I had imagined. I thought that was the most successful aspect of that production.

Can't think of any novel characters that I pictured as specific actors while reading the book right now, but I'm sure I've done it.

I regularly imagine certain actors as characters in a novel while I am reading it. When I first read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I put Bill Pullman in the role of Zaphod Beeblebrox. Two heads, three arms, and all. I usually do it instinctively, without actually "deciding" who should play whom.

I was hoping to see Sean Bean or Tim Roth play Sirius Black for Harry Potter POA

There's a character in Joe Lansdale's book, Cold in July, that made me think of Robert Mitchum immediately. Admittedly, I'm sure this is partly because Lansdale was openly using Cape Fear as an influence for that particular novel :)

My favorite Stephen King book is The Stand, and for years whenever I read it, I pictured Cicely Tyson (in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" makup) as Mother Abigail. I also pictured Tommy Lee Jones as the sturdy, taciturn character of Stu Redman. Gary Sinese played Stu in the TV miniseries, which is pretty close, I suppose. Otherwise, the casting (indeed, the movie itself) didn't do much for me.

in retrospect, having read Starship Troopers several times (before the movie came out), I would've thought Lou Diamond Phillips would fit for the Johnny Rico role, not particularly because the Rico character is described with any detail, but partly because he's Filipino and although Phillips is not, he looks more like it than anyone else. and he just seems about right for the role, for some undescribeable reason or other.

I sometimes thought of Robert De Niro as Salvatore Guiliano in The Sicilian. Makes no movie sense, I guess, since he is already the young Vito. But since the novel takes place when the young Michael was in Sicily, I thought of Vito as Brando, Michael as Pacino, and wanted an equal presence as Guiliano.

I've been reading LOTR for over 35 years.

When I first heard Jackson was going to film it, in '98 or '99, I thought Ian McKellen (or John Hurt) would be perfect to play Gandalf. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I saw Sir Ian in the role.

Claire, my story is similar to yours. When the LOTR films were first announced, I immediately thought of Elijah Wood for Frodo. I'm very proud Jackson and Co. agreed with me :D
