Primal (PS2) progressive scan? (1 Viewer)

I've seen various reports that Primal has a progressive scan option. Anyone know how to enable it? I can't find it in any of the menus. This would be the first PS2 game I've tried in 480p, so is there anything goofy I have to do like holding down the red button on the Gamecube?

Thanks,
Dave

I can't guarantee this will work for "Primal", but I believe both "Tekken 4" and "Burnout 2" require holding down X and Triangle after the PS2 logo appears.

That did the trick, thanks! Man, it sure is a looker. As good as a good Xbox game.

How's the gameplay, Dave? I liked the demo, but it's been getting mixed reviews. I've even seen "Ico" mentioned a few times as a comparison. What's that about?

ICO is one of the best games i've ever played, its relatively short but one hell of a fantastic gaming experience ... graphics, sound and atmosphere are all amazing.

Not "What's Ico?", but why are they comparing Primal to that jewel of a game? Ico is great. I rented it from Blockbuster and played the entire game even though the disk sticker made it unbalanced and my PS2 was screaming in pain.

I'll post some impressions when I get back from work, but in short, the only similarity to Ico is that you control 2 characters. Primal is much more of an action game. Lots of fun so far & the best graphics I've ever seen on a PS2. I had rented it, but I'm buying the game today.

Oops sorry :D

Ive only had a quick play with Primal but i'll agree the graphics are pretty sweet, gameplay reminds me a bit of Drakan/SoulReaver type games.

Ok, here's the basic premise: You are Jen, a goth chick dating a guy in a band, and trying to get your life together. As the game starts, your boyfriend's band is playing in a bar when a huge hulk of a monster comes in and scares the bejeezus out of your boyfriend. While leaving the club, the monster attacks - taking the boyfriend away (dead?), and leaving Jen unconscious.

When she wakes, a stone gargoyle takes Jen to the dimension of Oblivion, where the four demon realms where Chaos and Order constantly fighting and maintaining a balance. As to be expected, something is amiss & things are falling out of balance. And as usual, you are the chosen one. Time to kick some demon butt. :)

Gameplay consists of the usual run-around-solve-puzzles-and-kill-things. It's somewhat similar in style to the recent Indiana Jones game, just with a vastly different premise. :) Primal adds it's own touch to the genre by allowing the main character to take different forms. So far I only have one demon form and the human form. It's a bit of a disappointment that once you get the first demon form, there is no reason to revert to the human form (at least so far). If you run out of energy you will revert, but there is no reason to choose it. Hopefully there will be reasons to switch between the various demon forms.

You can also take control of Scree, the gargoyle. Typically this is to gain access to different areas, scale walls, or to absorb energy from the fallen enemies. Scree is supposed to absorb the energy on his own, then you can call the energy from him, but I find that I have to take control of manually absorb it. This is probably my biggest gripe with the game. It's unnecessary, and really slows the game down.

Visually, I cannot praise this game enough. From both a technical and an aesthetic standpoint, it is superb. The PS2 has never seen graphics this good. I said before that it was like a good Xbox game. I've changed my mind - it's better than most Xbox games. There are many nice touches in the game, such as Scree's slightly transparent wings, and an ab-so-frikken-lutely amazing smoke face that appears in an in-game cutscene. Typically I buy a game for the PS2 as a last resort. I just can't stand the dull colors and "shimmering" quality of interlacing, but I'm re-evaluating my stance on the PS2. After seeing this & Guilty Gear X2, I have a new respect for the machine.

Overall, it's an above average action-adventure game, with exemplary graphics. So far it's easier than I would prefer, but it's enjoyable. I've heard that the graphics are much better than the demo, but I never had the opportunity to try the demo.
