Looking for great receiver $600-$800 (1 Viewer)

G;day folks. Just migrated from Australia and am looking for some real good brand name receiver around $800 range. I can go bit more if its something really worth it. I like good quality sound without hiss & distortions..not concerned about sheer loudness. I will use it for pop, classic, movies & games. What's your opinions on Onkyo, Nakamichi, Maranz etc..

What size system...5.1, 6.1, 7.1? What speakers?

Recommend NAD and H/K simply for honest power and great sound. Marantz is also usually a solid choice for sound quality. Higher level Sony ES fits the bill and budget as well.

I was just shopping around for a ~$800 receiver and found a lot of information at Crutchfield on most main stream receivers.

$800 can get you an Onkyo TX SR-700 which has 6.1 and all the current formats.
$600 can get you a Kenwood VR-5080 which is 6.1 but no power for reach channel. It is one of the cheapest THX Select certified receivers though if that means anything to you.

$800 for a Denon 2803 which has 7x90w.
$800 for an HK AVR325 which is 7x50w.
$400 can get you a Panasonic SA-HE200 which has 6x130w.
$600 Sony ES STR-DA2ES 6x100w.

There are also models by Outlaw audio and Rotel which are popular. You might even consider buying a used Rotel 5.1 $400 pre/pro and a Parasound 5 channel amp for like $400 for some nice sound quality for DD and DTS movies.

Most of the models above have your popular formats of Dolby and DTS. Some have multi source/room capabilities and are at least 6.1 ready. I doubt any of them will have hiss and distortion but there will likely be some more subtle audible differences in the way they sound.

You could minimize the receivers by deciding on what you're looking for like: 6 powered channels, pre amp outs, multi/source, Dolby Digital EX, HDCD, or thx certified.

Don't forget you can get better prices than what Crutchfield offers. For example you can get the Harman Kardon AVR 525 (70w x7) from discounters for around $725 or so shipped.
