Monitor refresh rate confusion (1 Viewer)

I run Windows XP and Red Hat on my PC. In Windows my refresh is listed as 72 Hertz, 75 Hertz, etc. In Red Hat my refresh rate is listed as a horizontal and vertical rate, in other words a different number for each. The Red Hat numbers do not come close to matching the Windows numbers. The problem I'm having is that I have to adjust the position of the picture using the controls on the monitor when I switch from Windows to Red Hat at vice versa. I'd like to set the refresh rates to be the same between Windows and Red Hat, but don't understand how.

The vertical refresh rate is the one you have to worry about. The OS should sense what rates are compatible with your monitor at the set resolution.
