world war 1 movie? (1 Viewer)

well all war movies i have seen were WW2. any movie that took place on WW1? i would like to see one. thanks

The all-time best WWI films would have to be Paths of Glory, Lawrence of Arabia, and All Quiet on the Western Front.

You might also want to check out the A&E original film called The Lost Battalion. It's far from great, but is worth a look (especially if you are interested in WWI).

I just saw Paths of Glory for the first time last night, very good movie.

Gallipoli is decent.

No list of the great WWI films would be complete without the inclusion of Renoir's La Grande Illusion.

It's funny how a person can remember a scene out of a movie but not remember the movie. There was a WWI movie that I saw when I was a kid and the only scene I can remember was an aerial dogfight taking place. Two of the planes involved in it end up colliding propellor to propellor. IIRC just before the dogfight breaks out the Germans are putting up flak and the British or American flyers strafe the batteries in an attempt to knock out the guns. Wish I could remember what the name of the movie was. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, to see how it holds up.

Edit: Just wanted to add the The Dawn Patrol (1938) as my pick for a good WWI movie. Unfortunately, I don't think it is out on DVD, but if you can find it on VHS or Laserdisc it is a good watch.

I will second Paths of Glory and Lawrence of Arabia...both are two of the greatest ever made...

Legends of the Fall had some WW1 stuff in it.

All Quiet On The Western Front is superb.

Also check out The Big Parade, which isn't on DVD yet. The tape may be out of print, along with the laserdisc. Turner Classic Movies will air it this month (or May, not sure) so I'd check their schedule if you want to see it.

Sergeant York is a winner set in WWI though is more about things other than WWI itself.

There's that season of Blackadder that's in WW1

Don't pass up "A Farewell To Arms". There are 2 releases 1932 and 1957 I believe. There's another one similar that was released in the 1990's with Sandra Bullock also.

Also "Oh,What a Lovely War!" WWI All star british cast and one of the best War film satires. Currently unavilable on DVD, but shows up on cable from time to time.

Also "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" takes place over both WWI & WWII. Recently released on DVD.

Being a Kubrick fan, i'd say Paths of Glory.

To second what many others have written:

La Grande Illusion, consider a masterpiece ever since it was made, filled with the spirit of humanity and such a powerful statement on war itself, that the Germans tried to have destroyed during their occupation of France in WWII.

All Quiet on the Western Front, a film adapation of one of the most powerful anti-war novels of all time (and likely the most powerful to come out of WWI). Some of it seems a bit dated today, but it is well made and is well worth watching.

Paths of Glory, from a novel by the same name, based on one part of the Battle of Verdun, one of the bloodiest and most mindless of the war. IIRC it is somewhat based on a real incident. The source material is not to powerful as ‘Western Front’, but Kubrick has perhaps made a better film.

Lawrence of Arabia based on T. E. Lawrence’s exploits in the Middle East during WWI and on his book, Seven Pillars of Wisdom. This film glorifies war (just as Lawrence learns to).

Gallipoi, Peter Weir’s film about the battle of the same name. Though not so well known in the States, this battle is perhaps the defining moment in Australia’s history, in terms of becoming a nation. A fine comment on the futility of war.

Oh, What a Lovely War should be on your list when it becomes available.

Live and Death of Colonel Blimp is a great movie, but spans everything from the end of the Boer War to WWII. And is really only concerned with WWI for maybe 25% of the film.

Isn't the silent movie "Wings" about pilots in WWI? I only saw bits of it a long time ago and cannot remember much about it. Or did it pre-date WWI??
