Posted ImageThey've got...the ability to morph, and to even up the score!Posted Image

[c]Posted Image[/c]

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definate price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including. In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. I have a lovely wife and a five-year-old son I'd rather spend time with. Please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

As you can see, I had a LOT to research today, so that's why it's this late:

* BE CAREFUL! Red Dragon - Collector's Edition is available in both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions...get the correct one.

* Non-OAR discs are, as usual, entirely left off the Roundup. Example: The Couch Trip.

* Best Buy has a Friends-ly deal for you! Buy JUST S3 and pay the $29.99 +tax listed in the Roundup. Buy S3 and a second season set (either S1 or S2) at the same time and save $15 off the total. Buy S1, S2, and S3 all at once and save $25 off the total.

* Best Buy also has a deal to save $5 when you buy Yellow Submarine or A Hard Day's Night on the same transaction as The Beatles Anthology

* Best Buy is running another 3 for $30 special (where again you can get them for $10 each if you order via BB.com and mark for in-store pickup). The titles are: Chocolat, Good Will Hunting, Rushmore, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, The Cider House Rules, Dead Poet's Society, The Kid, Armageddon, Tombstone, Amelie (note that none of these seem to be "Special", "Vista", or "Criterion" editions, just the most-barebones version on the market).

* And, since I seem to be a Best Buy booster this week, I'll remind you that purchasing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 2 at BB (or Suncoast, MediaPlay, Sam Goody, or FutureShop) will also get a bonus "Quark's Story" DVD:
Posted Image

* On the other hand, stay the heck away from Best Buy's insane price on the new Universal release of The Andromeda Strain! Posted Image WTF? $8 more than all the other Universal re-releases that come out this week? And what's up with those Disney Sing-Alongs, too? Must be trying to make up for all the loss leaders. Posted Image Anyway, be sure to shop selectively...make sure the price really IS your, ahem, best buy. Posted Image

* A word about Ultimate Rangers: The Best of the Power Rangers: I found this early at a street-date breaker, and my 5-year-old son has gone wild over it! Details about this release can be found here. It really IS five of the best all-time Power Ranger sagas (including 3 two-part episodes). For those of you who have some of these episodes on VHS tapes and wonder whether it is good to replace them, YES! The best video quality you've ever seen on these episodes (all problems are source-based, and they are few), outstanding Dolby stereo sound, and a cool 10th Anniversary Poster thrown in for grins. There ARE a few deficits: new edits that, while minimal, die-hard fans won't appreciate; a lack of chapter stops within each episode, and no real extras other than a "Play All" feature. However, I can recommend this release, and my son is now looking foward to the Ninja Storm DVD in June. Even though this release isn't advertised in Target's flyer, I expect that this week's release will be found there, and probably in Wal-Mart as well. Look in those stores for the best prices first. Frankly, I paid about $2 too much...but my son's excitement was worth it! Posted Image

* Well, thirty titles plus a truckload of markdowns is enough for anybody. I'm calling it a Roundup. If you can't find a dozen things on these lists you want to own, then I just don't know about you! I know there's a dozen things on their I want to own...and in a couple of cases, I already do! Posted Image ENJOY!!

Is the only difference between the Red Dragon discs extra features, or does the Director's Edition have a new cut of the film?

Nothing for me this week. I'm pretty disappointed in the prices on the 2-disc Red Dragon. Won't be long before we see a price drop on that I hope.

* In your reprices, remember that To Gillian on her 37th Birthday is Pan & Scan only Posted Image.

* It's GREAT to see WB reduce the MSRP on the Friends season sets. I wish Paramount would follow suit with Star Trek, which is vastly overpriced, particularly for DS9.

Definitely getting Continental Divide. I'm still thinking about whether I should get the Director's Edition of Red Dragon (the only difference is that it has a bonus disc of additional special features) - it's rather expensive for just an extra disc. I'll probably wait for it to go down in price sometime in the future. Might also get The Couch Trip, Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and Fahrenheit 451 - perhaps also Andromeda Strain. I already have West Side Story on order on-line.

Thanks, David. Looks like I'll finally pick up the Good Will Hunting SE, for $10. I also may pick up all 3 seasons of Friends at BB, assuming they're each $29.99. That $25 off is tempting. Also, for anyone interested, SamGoody.com has the Red Dragon Director's Edition (2-disc set) on sale for $19.99 (4 cents more than the 1-disc versions there). Free shipping for 2 or more items, as well.

Anyone know what Best Buy's prices are going to be for Friends Season One and Season Two?

Their web site says Suggest Retail Price: $39.98 while their Buy button says $59.99.

Thanks again David for the excellent Roundup!

I know most of us here are interested in B&M shopping (especially folks like me who miss the salad days of the Reel.com coupons and pricematches!) and that loss-leader pricing and "instant gratification" usually leads us to shop at our local B&Ms.

However for those interested in Friends Season 3 (only, not the combo deals that S1-3 can be had at Best Buy - which is the way to go if you need more than just S3) and Red Dragon 2-disc edition, and you are more interested in saving money than instant gratification, check out the other thread about getting this from Overstock.com. There's a link to a 10% off your total purchase over there, and if you do, you can get Friends S3 and Red Dragon 2-disc (not the 1 disc CE) for about $48 shipped. Best Buy + tax on these (mine is 8.25%) comes out to about $62, thus a savings of about $14! Posted Image Check it out if you're interested in those two titles only and want to save dough and aren't interested in instant gratification. Of course Overstock only ships via USPS Media Mail so expect your items to take 5-8 working days to ship to you (though they've already shipped my Red Dragon, Friends S3 hasn't shipped). Hey in this downturned economy, I need all the savings I can get! Posted Image

What kind of edit are there?
Power Rangers was always a guilty pleasure of mine, and it will be great to revisit some of the early episodes, plus the fact that my son loves PR
Dave, do you know any more about what is on the Ninja Storm (the best rangers since Mighty Morphin IMO) DVD? The title is the title of just the first episode, but the running time would indicate 1-4 which would be good, and give a hint to upcoming DVD's once the Thunder Rangers appear.
Costco will have DS9: Season 2 for $84.99.
Now THAT I didn't know, but I suspected. For S1 it was evident that, while it wasn't in Costco stores on street date, it was there within a week afterward, at the price mentioned. I suspect S2 will be the same. If you want to save the money, it's worth waiting and seeing. If you hate to miss someone else's sales price, then pick it up but leave it sealed for a week (if you can stand it), and then return it if you can get the Costco deal. In fact, return the one without the bonus disc...they'll never realize it!

Wow, haven't been to Circuit City in awhile. I'll be picking up West Side Story and Far from Heaven there. Preordered Ghost & Mrs. Muir awhile ago from Bestbuy.com, taking advantage of their fox promo back then. As always, Thanks Dave!
