I'm planning on traveling to Germany at the end of April and I want to bring my Sony camcorder along to film. However, I'm not sure how I'll be able to recharge the batteries because I'm not familiar with power converters at all. Could someone please suggest a solution to my problem? Thanks.

Sean, with respect, yout title question about 'electricity in *Europe*' is misleading - different European countries have different supplies. I don't know about Germany, I'm afraid, but given the plethora of Japanese/American tourists all over Europe with camcorders, I can't believe that there isn't a solution ;)

Are you going to be in a hotel? Then you can most probably recharge your batteries on the shaver outlet. Modern hotels often have converters for overseas customers built in those outlets. Generally, the 110V version of those outlets are also conforming to the US-type plug.

I do the same when I'm in England/Ireland/the US, etc.

If you're not going to be in a hotel: buy a 240 -> 110 V converter. They're here too, don't look for "Radio Shack", but equivalent shops exist :).

Does anyone else find this subject shocking? It even has a plug for Sony!

This has been another pointless post...

Check the little power pack for your camcorder for charging. Most likely, it is a multi-voltage pack (it'll say 100-240V, 50/60Hz). If it is, then you can just get the two-prong adapter, and plug it directly into the wall in Germany.
I was just there, and I did this exact thing with:
1. My Sony DSC-S70 digital camera
2. My HP Laptop
3. My Toshiba SD-P2000 portable DVD player
All three have multi-voltage power packs, so I had no issues charging batteries with the ordinary 220V/50Hz wall supply there.
