DSOTM and Police remaster's compress better (mp3) (1 Viewer)

I got my hybrid copy the Police - Greatest Hits and DSOTM. I've ripped the CD layer to my computer and compressed them with LAME 3.92 using --alt preset extreme. I've noticed on both, especially on The Police, that the redbook layer of the SACD seems to compress to mp3 much better than the previous CD I had of it. IE: the average bitrate of the mp3s is lower than the previous CDs.

I would think that if the remaster's are capturing more of what is on the master tapes than the old versions did shouldn't they take up more space, not less?

It has been demonstrated (using PC software) that the new releases, at least on Redbook (not sure about the high-res), have had their dynamic range limited (compressed) over previous CD versions.

This could certainly allow them to take up less (compressed) space digitally.

I listened to the redbook layer on DSOTM and I can't say that I think it sounds compressed compared to the other CD of it I had. I'll have to look at it in Sound Forge later.

Sorry I wasn't more specific. I was referring to the Police disc, which is definitely more compressed than the old CDS.

I'll have to check that one out too. I thought the redbook Police sounded better in my car than I recalled the older one sounding. I haven't listened to the redbook police yet on my home system.

The numbers don't lie. At least some of the Police tracks have been compressed by 4db or so, and at least 'Money' on the new Pink Floyd disc has had some 'buzz cut' limiting.

It doesn't mean that they will sound 'worse' or 'better' to you; that depends on your own listening paradigms. And it's not like they compressed the living hell out of them like contemporary pop titles. Sadly, some people would like that.
