OK i admit it! I bought my HDTV for video game purposes... (1 Viewer)

OH dont tell me no one here has not done the same thing!!!! surely i cant be the only one...
well the tv is not JUST for video games but i am wondering about something...
i have gone from a 32" GE TV useing an s-video cable for my systems to a 52" RCA ... im useing the componet cables on the RCA tv and it looks very nice but i did use the s-video cables to compair the 32" to the 52" and i must say the 52" looked like crap useing the s-video.. even after tuning the 52"...the 32" still has a cleaner/brighter picture then the 52".... y would it look so bad on the 52" could it mean that this tv is crap? or is it one way to make the component look way better so thay make the s-video look like crap and tricking people in to thinking that component is some revolutionary new (i know its not new) hook up for tvs when its really just as good as s-video? or could i still be not tuning something right?

If you are using Component on the 52 and it looks good, why are you worried about making the S-Vid input look as good also? Most RPTV's maintain individual settings on a per-input basis, so you may need to tweak each svid/component input seperately to get the same results.

i have an xbox, ps2 and a gamecude hooked up to it...right now i only have the gamecube using the component cables... one of thous systems will be hooked up via the s-videa as this tv only have 2 component inputs..... i just thought it was strang that the s-video dont look as good on this 52" as it dose on the 32" as you said this TV's maintain individual settings for each input but i have played around with the settings for the s-video input that im useing one of the systems on. no matter how i set them..... it still dont look as clear as it did on the 32"..... it would be mestup if this brand makes a bad s-video input....is that possible?

Gaming wasn't my only reason for buying a projector, but it was a big part of the reason.

One thing to think about is that a larger TV will generally expose any imperfections in the signal path, from the source, through the cables, etc. Just the fact that every pixel is larger lends itself to this.

I too have a PS2, Xbox, and GC, and after seeing each of them on an 80" screen, it became clear that component is the way to go. This is especially true of the Xbox and GC, with their superior graphics power. The PS2 in some cases is better off in S-Video since it helps mask the aliasing in some games.

Most xbox games are 480p, with some being 720p HD and a rare few at 1080i HD.

yes well ill be useing the gamecube and xbox via component cable...and the ps2 will use s-video.... i like both the gamecube and xbox for differant ressons... thanks for the reply john....would you happen to know what xbox games support the 720p and 1080i?

Ok, you have a few things going on here:

As EdR pointed out the smaller screen hides imperfections better than a large screen. A HDTV is a high-resolution device, and a HDTV will try and up-convert the signal which makes it MORE sensitive to small imperfections.

A new TV takes a few weeks to settle in. Grab a copy of Avia and adjust the basic brightness/contrast in the first few days, then check again in 5 weeks and you will need to re-adjust.

The brightness/contrast settings are source dependent. If you read the "Secrets of Home Theater" reports on progressive scan DVD players, burried in the text is advice that the display should have separate adjustments for each connection, and you should calibrate each one independently of the others. Chances are your current settings for the SVideo feed are better than the settings for component feed.

My Advice:

- Go get the Monster HD cable for the XBox. It runs about $60 and replaces the need for the cheap Microsoft Advanced AV pack. (Simpler is better in this case).

- Hook up the XBox, go to the Dashboard and tell it to output Progressive. Then pop in a copy of Avia and follow the tutorial on setting brightness/contrast/focus for this input

Chances are, this will make the XBox your best video source.

As a later resort, if the quality is still better with SVideo, consider hiring a ISF Calibrationist to come out and adjust things. He can dive into the service menu and do lots of tweeking. People who have had this done have gushed about the improved picture quality and the 'like looking through a window' effect.
