Welcome to my Future Classics Tournament.

What's it all about? Well, this tourney was inspired by a thread started over in Movies by John Kilduff (thanks, John!) on the supposed critical derision of films from the eighties - was that decade really a worse one for film than any other? How about the nineties? Anyway, imagine the world 2050. Which films of the last two decades or so will be considered classics? That's the gist of this tourney - it won't be about simply voting for your favorite film - you'll be expected to make a critical decision on which film in a particular matchup will truly stand the test of time.

The tournament is now over. Go away. :)

Just a suggestion (its your tourney)

I'd limit the years to 20 max. In my mind a worthy film over 20 years old is already a classic (i.e. Jaws, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, etc.)

I'll be back later with some nominations.

I'll start it off with some personal favorites that should grow in stature over time:

Breaking the Waves
Nashville
Magnolia
Raise the Red Lantern
The Right Stuff

Perhaps - can I get some more feedback on this? Should I limit this to 20 years? Or start with 1980 vs. 1975? Leave it as it is?

FWIW, while the films Jim mentioned are certainly eligible for this tourney, I'd really like to see more lists like the one Chris has. :emoji_thumbsup:

Nominate:

American Beauty
Fargo
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Being John Malkovich
Rushmore

Second:

Magnolia

I'm trying to stay very recent, as many films from the 70s and even 80s are already pretty much regarded as classics.

If we are trying to predict future classics, then I'd limit it to films from the last 10 years or so, as many 70's and 80's films are already considered 'classics' by some viewers.

Nominate:

L.A. Confidential
Pulp Fiction
The Shawshank Redemption
Toy Story
Last of the Mohicans

- Walter.

I'll second

Pulp Fiction
Last of the Mohicans

I'd also second The Right Stuff but its 20 years old so I already consider it a classic.

Second Raise the Red Lantern (already a classic, in my mind at least). :D
Second American Beauty.
Second Fargo.
Second L.A. Confidential.
Second Pulp Fiction.

Nominate The Thin Red Line.
Nominate The Royal Tenenbaums.
Nominate Blue.
Nominate White.
Nominate Red.

Tell me that the triology counts as one nomination, and I'd be happy to send in a couple more noms...

Okay, I've decided to go back only to 1982 - no films made in 1981 or before are eligible. Chris_Richard, I had to toss Nashville. Sorry.

Angelo: thanks for seconding Raise the Red Lantern. :emoji_thumbsup: I agree that it's a classic. Also, Pulp Fiction and L.A. Confidential were already seconded so you still have those seconds.

What, no nomination for The English Patient? The disdain for this film continues to confound me...
