Am I alone in thinking that it's about time that The WB Network's television series 'Charmed' was released on DVD? I read many Internet rumours that the series' complete first season was to be released this month, but obviously they were just that: rumours. :frowning:

The show is in its fifth season and there's no sign as yet of any DVD releases (or soundtracks, etc.). 'Buffy' is, what, in its seventh season and already has three seasons of DVDs out (and 2 soundtracks). I frankly don't really care about the music so the fact that there aren't any CD soundtracks doesn't really bother me, but I don't see what the delay is in releasing at least the first season episodes and preferrably some extra features (eg. bloopers, behind-the-scenes, commentary, interviews...)

Anyone here have any additional news?

I believe Charmed has just entered syndication, so they want to get their runs there. Charmed also has a lot of music in it that would need to be cleared for DVD that is A- Time consuming and B-expensive

Buffy has a MUCH larger fanbase than Charmed, and also it's music was pre-cleared for video, plus it's part of a forward thinking studio, all of which contributed to the reason why it's got 3 seasons out.

Thanks for your insight, Jeff. I never considered the clearing of music - though I used to think that if it was cleared for use on the series to begin with, then it was fine for release.

In any case, I guess I'll have to just keep waiting.

If you were to poll company reps, music clearances are the single biggest hurdle to many shows being released. WKRP in Cincinatti will not be hitting DVD via Fox(or possibly via ANYONE) because the music rights are in the neighborhood of $3-5 million dollars.

My partner has been asking for Charmed since I got my first X-files set. It's his #2 want after Golden Girls.

I myself would be happy if they just released the latter seasons, but I understand the desire for the complete series.

One benefit on music clearances is that many of the artists featured here are WB artists. Their benefit was less fee than promotion. I imagine that WB music can help make clearances fairly smooth for WB home video.

Nod...

I've long since bemoaned the fact that the people at Charmed think its a great idea to put all that music into it... frankly I could care less about the "musical guest stars" like Michelle Branch last week and I'd be VERY fine with it if they had to replace the opening music (the music over the SF scenic shots as they begin the episode etc etc) and stuff because they couldn't get clearance rights for the music originally aired cause I wouldn't notice the difference!!

It's also what is probably holding up Ally McBeal but at least they integrated the musical guests better into their plotlines... can't believe that was only 5 seasons long!

We'll see Charmed someday I'm sure.. it'll just be weird to watch the first seasons with Prue again since i've gotten use to Rose McGowan as the 3rd sister.

In a semi related note... I'm tickled cause I got notice that QAF S2 shipped today... it's been my most anticipated tv on dvd for a while since this is the only way I get to see the show!

That's exactly what's holding up Ally McBeal. The best-of they put out didn't do well, and the other female-skewed (yes I know men like them too) titles haven't done too well either.

Ally McBeal is available in Region 2

pardon the slight thread hijack but thanks Jeff... I hadn't been keeping up and if I decide I really want Ally now... now I know where to get it!

I, too, could do without the musical guests; they're mainly on at the end of the show anyway, for at most 2 minutes, and they're lip-synching. It's a good promotion tool, and I suppose a way to attract new viewers by attracting fans of the musical guest, but for the episode itself it adds nothing.

As for the opening sequences, I prefer to leave the music in. Although fans know and have known for five seasons that 'Charmed' takes place in SF, I personally don't like seeing credits rolling as the plot unfolds. The scenic view of the city gets rid of most of them before the show actually begins.

I just don't understand why they couldn't get all the music pre-cleared for video when it seems that television series are being released regularly these days. Apparently some 'selected episodes' have already been released in France and Italy... it seems that Europe gets more North American series on video than North Americans do. How ironic! Reminds me of what's going on with the whole 'Bionic Woman/Six Million Dollar Man' series, but I digress! :)

Who do we contact about this? To get more info? I receive tons of emails daily asking when Charmed will be out on DVD yet have heard nothing at all.

It just kinda annoys me that there is talk of Smallville being released on DVD already AND it has a soundtrack out AND action figures, yet Charmed still hasn't had anything. Its not like its not wanted because its one of the questions I constantly get asked (DVD's).

I just wish that we had someone to confirm whether or not they have plans for it anytime soon, or if they don't and if not then why.

Ok I'm confused... I was only advocating replacing the *music* of the opening SF shots if that's what was holding up release. You appear to have interpreted it as I advocate replacing the entire opening credits, audio AND video and that's not the case.

What I was thinking was that they could just replace the music... ie hire some musicians to create a standard music piece for the opening SF scenic credits sequence and use that instead of the "held up in legal" broadcasted music pieces.

Just trying to clarify things.

It's definitely going to be weird to see Prue again since I've gotten really used to Paige on the show.
