I'm not just asking for IMAX 3-D prints... I'm demanding them! Sure, it's digital, so they'd have to DMR like no tomorrow, but... man... that would be among the spiffiest things ever.

What format of 3-D is this going to be? Most newer screens can't properly reflect polarized 3-D, which is why "Freddy's Dead" had the 3-D segment in the awful red/blue format. I'd love to see 3-D come back, but only done properly!

I'd also like to know the 3-D technique in use here. Polarized (gray polariod glasses) and field sequential (LCD glasses) are the best options, but in today's world of multi-plex theatres with no projectionists, it would be next to impossible to pull off on 2000 screens at once. Special screens, lenses, and equipment are needed.

Anaglyph (red/blue) would be simple to do, as no special equipment is needed except for the glasses, but the results would be poor.

I'm really hoping this isn't another attempt at exploiting the "pulfrich illusion" which isn't really 3-D at all. It is just a naturally occuring illusion of depth which occasionally happens during scenes which have camera movement in the opposite direction of the background. If that sounds complicated, just take a camcorder and shoot out the passenger side window as you drive (around 20 MPH). Go home, put a dark filter over your right eye and you'll see a 3-D effect. It only works as long as the car is moving, though. Stop and the depth illusion goes away. This technique does not allow for any "off the screen" gimmicks and only works when the people shooting know exactly what they are doing. It has been tried (usually unsuccessfully) in a few music videos, cartoons, sitcom segments, even a Super Bowl Halftime show, but only works for a few seconds at at a time.

I think they should use the best technology and run the 3-D version in just a handful of theatres so they can control the costs and the projection. The general release could be flat only. This is what Universal should do with any CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake, too.

The current rumor is they are contemplating anaglyph for the general theatrical release, and could go polarized or shutter if there were ever any IMAX prints.

Good, at least we are talking stereoscopic 3-D in some form!

It would be very cool if they came up with a realistic way to have 3-D in general release. If not, IMAX 3-D would very likely be incredible. I wonder how they'd do the aspect ratio for IMAX though, would they show it 1.85 or would they shoot Spy Kids 3 Open Matte.

I'll also be sure to give Spy Kids 2 a rental when it comes out this Tuesday.

I know that this thread is about a family movie but reading about 3D movies reminded me of my first 3D movie experience.

When I was in college, I told a couple of friends that I had never seen a 3D movie. A few days later they told me that there was a 3D movie at a local theater and so we went. I can't remember the name of the movie. Never even saw it advertised on TV or the newspaper.

Anyway you could tell that the movie was low budget and the acting was very poor. I don't remember any of the plot but early on in the film some guy in an army uniform was walking down some dirt road. Out of a bush pops out some beauty queen. She had a gown, crown, banner, everything. What she was doing hiding behind a bush in the middle of no where, I don't know. The sound quality was so bad that I couldn't understand everything being said. So the army guy and the beauty queen mumble to each other for about 60 seconds then they walk off together.

In the next scene...
they are on top of some hill..completely naked and doing the nasty!

Yes, my buddies tricked me into seeing a 3D porno! You can guess how they used the 3D effect.

While I understand why they are using the "improved" red/cyan anaglyph for the SPY KIDS 3D general release, I hope that some theatres get a polarized version.

Since roughly 150 standard multiplex theatres will be running GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS in polarized 3-D (in addition to IMAX theatres) and had to be certified to do it, doesn't it make sense to offer a better version to those venues? Hopefully this will be an option. Here in Las Vegas, we've got two multiplexes certified for 3-D. An IMAX theatre will run the 3-D version as well.

Cameron stated in USA TODAY this week that he will shoot a feature film with major actors in 3-D soon. With his improved projection system, it isn't far fetched. The 3-D version would play in certified theatres only, and a modified flat print could run in general release.

Universal, when doing a CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake, go this route!

I'm hoping that between this film, and Cameron's next, 3d receives the revitalization I've been waiting for. Surely today's technology can provide a kick ass 3-d movie experience.

I just hope it isn't gimmicky... you know, used to enhance the experience rather than to create the experience.
