I just read over at DVD File that Lions Gate are reissuing Cube as a Special Edition on April 15th! New anamorphic transfer, commentary track, deleted scenes, storyboards, trailers etc.

Sweet! One of my favourite films finally gets the treatment it deserves! :D

Sadly, the only thing missing from this release is the short film Elevated. :frowning:

But will I buy this re-release? Your damn straight I will. I'll also pick up Hypercube: Cube 2 while I'm at it.

Along with these two titles and 100 Women, Lions Gate has made April one hell of a month.

I saw this news yesterday at the Gorezone, and it made me ecstatic! CUBE is easily one of my personal top fifteen favorite films of all time, and even though I own the current release, you can bet your ass I'm all over this one! In fact, I've already got it preordered since late last night along with CUBE II: HYPERCUBE. I can't wait to FINALLY check out CUBE II as well, and these discs can't hit my mailbox soon enough!

Of course they're releasing an SE. I just bought the old release the other day!

Anamorphic transfer aside, are there any differences concerning the extras?

Looking forward to Cube 2, though.

Steve, yes, there is a new commentary by director Natali, a new interview with the very lovely star De Boer, and two new featurettes on set design and FX.

Can't wait for this. I've held off on the first DVD release and have always wished we'd get an anamorphic version.

how does cube 2 compare? should i buy it sight unseen?
I believe that Hypercube is direct to video/DVD.

I'm buying it sight unseen, on the strength of Cube, and I'm going to view it with lowered expectations, hoping it's at least half as good. :)

Here's what people at the IMDB are saying about Cube 2

The general consensus seems to be more or less negative.

I've seen Cube 2 and I'd say it's more interesting than the first one, but it's also more out there than the first one. Let me put it this way, if you liked the first one you'll like this one too.

AFAIK Cube II had a limited overseas release.

Anamorphic aside, didn't the original dvd have a commentary as well? IIRC the one that's at my local mom and pop (read: rabid film student) video store had

Audio Commentary
Trailers
Deleted Scenes
Production Notes
Storyboards, Set designs, Artwork

or is this a case of a Canadian version of a Canadian film getting way more extras (like the incredible differences between US and CAN releases of 'Ginger Snaps')

I saw Elevated recently at the University Of Toronto
where director Vincenzo Natali was present and screening Cube. He also showed clips from his 2 upcoming films Cypher
and Nothing. I must say I enjoyed these clips much better
than the short Elevated. Cypher just looks so damm cool.

Woohoo! I was about to crack and finally buy the regular version despite the non-anamprphic transfer. I was in the same boat as Jehan: never thought we'd get a better release.

My sister is working with Vincenzo on his next project (a sci fi called 'Nothing'.
She is editing it and she says it is way out there. Black comedy.
Vincenzo is a huge Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) fan.

Also look for Ginger Snaps 2(sequel) and 3 (Prequel)
Good ol sis is editing those as well and I'm looking for work there. ;)

Wow, lions gate actually releasing a GOOD version of a DVD... thinking back to Boondock Saints and how bad that DVD turned out, this is definately exciting. I'll be buying Cube without hesitation.

Cube 2: Hypercube... well, that's a different story, I saw it... the most I would say about it is it's a rental. Unless you can find it cheap. The movie has some fantastic visual effects and scientific ideas, but there's just too much conspiracy theory behind it and it doesn't fit in quite as well as the first.

Watching our friend from Forever Knight though.. that was very interesting :)

Like I said, definately rent Cube 2, don't miss it, but it's definately not a purchase for me unless I find it cheap.

Chris.

I believe the Canadian version was P&S only, that is why I ordered my copy from the U.S.
