Well, I'd suggest that any film made after Touch of Evil doesn't qualify as a noir. And that any film shot in color doesn't qualify as a noir. But it isn't my tourney. :)
Nominate:
Force of Evil
Out of the Past
The Big Sleep
The Big Heat
Second:
Double Indemnity
The Maltese Falcon
- Walter.

Edited my last nomination prior to it being seconded

Well, it's Steve's tourney... I'll go by whatever rules he wants to lay down.

Steve, how about you give us an idea of what you had in mind?

P.S. I move that anyone who nominates Star Wars for this tourney be immediately ousted from the HTF.

Well, I can see there will be a lot of 'discussion' about what is or isn't a noir film.

I'll third

The Maltese Falcon
L.A. Confidential

I'll second

Out of the Past
The Big Sleep
Double Indemnity

I'll nominate

Chinatown
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Sorry, Wrong Number
Body Heat

I would have liked to have nominated To Have & Have Not, but I think it's borderline noir.

Check out Walter's and George's posts - that's what I had in mind. I really don't think Mulholland Drive and Blade Runner qualify. They may have noirish overtones but that don't make 'em film noir.

Well this is a bucket of worms when you're dealing with film noir (genre or movement?). I'd agree that, roughly speaking, any film later than Touch of Evil wouldn't be a part of the film noir movement.

Nominate: The Third Man
Sweet Smell of Success
D.O.A. ('50)
The Naked City

Second: The Big Heat
The Postman Always Rings Twice ('46)

Third: Out of the Past
Double Indemnity
The Big Sleep

I second that motion. I'm sure someone could find a reason to include a Star Wars film. "Well, The Empire Strikes Back has dark overtones..." :D

Updated.

I've recently watched Fury, Raw Deal, and T-Men. The latter two are available on DVD (and quite cheaply from DeepDiscountDVD I might add). Check 'em out.

2nd
Notorious
Blue Velvet
Night of the Hunter (not sure on this one, it feels like noir, but it doesn't really seem like a noir story)

3rd
The Killing

Nominate
Ossessione (Visconti's 1st film is the 1st film version of The Postman Always Rings Twice)
Killer's Kiss
The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie (may need a ruling on this one, not sure if this is noir or not.)
