Films with offending copy protection code will now be reported at the bottom, and the printing lab. Deluxe is the spotty, tetris-shaped patterns, and Technicolor is the more spaced code. I will also post on a scale out of 10 how much this ticked off yours truly while viewing the film. Click HERE for more information. This will be brought into full swing on the 2004 Film List.

Top Ten Most Anticipated
1. Gerry - The new film from Gus van Sant – I’ve heard it takes minimalism and existentialism to new cinematic heights. Also, the influence of the great Bela Tarr, the thematic similarities to Samuel Beckett, and the music of Arvo Pärt make this one almost unbearably difficult to wait for. The trailer is fantastic. Completely lived up to my expectations -- see it any way you can. Can't believe people are saying that nothing happens in this movie; everything happens in this movie. Particularly loved the pacing of tone, with the hilarious first half juxtaposed against the eerie, mostly silent shuffling dirge of the latter. The films very first line, upon utterance an incomplete sentence, seems like the most complete, telling one in the entire film once it reaches its ironic end: "The trail, Gerry."
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Not really any explanation necessary here. Though I was somewhat underwhelmed by The Two Towers, my disappointment was muted since my expectations weren’t quite as high ("The Two Towers" is my least favorite of the books). "The Return of the King", however, is by far my favorite of the three books and the screen incarnation should be nothing less than an orgasm of dramatic spectacle. A nice finish and a definte rebound from the prior film. Still have problems with this one (especially the continued use of lame humor during the story's most dour moments), but there's little to complain about here.
3. Dogville - New Lars von Trier movie. Can’t be sure this one is coming out this year, but it is a distinct possibility, so I’m leaving it on for now. Doesn't come out officially until next year. Can't wait to witness the Grand Divide it will quickly chisel between the critical community.
4. Kill Bill - Looks really fun, though it’ll be interesting to see if Tarantino’s prowess has diminished or strengthened after such a long hiatus. It has strengthened.
5. Cowards Bend the Knee and The Saddest Music in the World - It would be difficult for me to pick which of these upcoming Guy Maddin films I'm anticipating more given that I know so little about each, but needless to say, I'm itching for another dosage of the directors retro-genius and I'm sure either will function as a good fix. One down, one to go. The nightmare-evoking Cowards Bend the Knee is probably the most feverish Maddin feature I've seen yet (his short Heart of the World is probably the closest in style) and like Dracula, it displays Maddin's preternatural pacing strengths. It runs only 61 minutes, not a second too long and not a second too short. For the majority of its running time, this is even more impressive than his other one this year, but unfortunately, the ending struck me as weak, which is the only reason it doesn't occupy the #1 spot on my years' best list so far.
6. The Matrix Reloaded - I’m a big fan of The Matrix so I’m crossing my fingers that the Bro’s don’t screw up what has the potential to be a fantastic trilogy. As a major fan of both Bound and The Matrix, I honestly didn't think it'd be possible for the Wachowski's to fuck this up so bad, but by god they've accomplished it, unfortunately. Everything that made the original so unique and compelling as a new grade of popcorn cinema (noirish, brooding photography; a balanced intertwining of sci-fi gibberish and philosophical underpinnings; a completely compelling story and fantastic characters) just goes to hell here in a movie that, in its awful first 40 minutes, resembles the worst of the two Star Wars prequels. It heats up a bit after that, but to say it's lacking that certain special element that the first possessed would be a massive understatement. Can't say I'm really anticipating the final installment now, so I've removed it from this list.
7. Ju-on - I just watched the original straight-to-video incarnation of this Japanese film and despite an ugly, low-budget shot-on-video look, it managed to frighten and unease me like few films ever have. Just the fact that this is the large-budget, theatrical continuation of the story would be enough to get me excited, but an even bigger cause for anticipation is that Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the director of the piss-your-pants-scary Pulse, had a major part in the production of this one. Word of mouth out of Japan is extremely strong. Well, I'd hoped that the presence of Kiyoshi Kurosawa would bring an understated creepiness to this, but it's obvious that he wasn't very involved on the creative front. This just isn't very effective, and even at 90-minutes it feels way too long. Go with the straight-to-video series -- they're far better.
8. Intolerable Cruelty - New Coen's. 'Nuff said. A disappointment in some capacities. The dialogue and wit are sharp as ever, but both the story progression and Joel's visuals seemed a bit dead here to me by comparison to the norm that I've come to expect. Great cinematography by Deakins, good performances all around, some very funny parts, but as a Coen's movie, it's probably my least favorite of their entire filmography.
9. The Son - The Dardenne Brother’s Rosetta was grim and powerful with a memorable (if sometimes nauseating) aesthetic. If The Son is anywhere near as good, it’ll be one of the best films of the year. Not quite as good as Rosetta so it qualifies as a minor disappointment, but a damn fine film nonetheless. The Dardennes' rigorously claustrophobic atmosphere is fairly similar to their previous film, but this one contains a catharsis at the end in deep contrast to Rosetta's grim abruption. One of the best of the year so far.
10. All the Real Girls - New DGG. 'Nuff said. Maybe the most honest, accurate portrayal of unsophisticated love I've ever seen. The whole thing operates as a well-oiled paradox machine, alternately blatant and completely subdued, making perfect sense and no sense at the same time -- and such is life. Green's dialogue perfectly illustrates the way people are unable to communicate when beset by such feirce emotions. No way I'm going to say it's perfect, but WOW anyways. I could write for ages on this movie, but this ain't the place, so look for a long review in another thread soon.
Others: Blissfully Yours, Wonderful Days, and any number of the surely dozens of interesting as-yet-unknown films that will premiere at Cannes this year.

Martin Koerber and the FW Murnau Foundation's reconstruction of Fritz Lang's influencial film is so far the closest thing we'll see to Lang's original vision. While the newly added title cards make the film seem more disjointed and awkward in pacing, it also goes to show Lang's enormous ambition in subplots. The restored print is glorious, and the original musical score that Lang had wanted is a vast improvement over Giorgio Moroder's pop soundtrack. Metropolis is both anti left and right, but it's in my opinion that it is more anti left than right; nevertheless, the film offers an abundance of ideas, as well as its visionary and incrediable influence on all movies to come afterward. Its power only increases with this restoration, and more than ever, it stands as a true milestone of motion pictures.
