Here's a place to discuss your favorite (and least favorite) undead and "infected" films!
While I don't have time to write full-length reviews, I hope you'll enjoy my capsule reviews and comments. And please remember that this thread is a work in progress - those zombie flicks keep a comin' just like the living dead themselves!
Ratings range from bomb to ****

I love zombie movies. My favorites are Dead Alive/Braindead, Night Of The Living Dead(remake), Dawn Of The Dead(original), Return Of The Living Dead, and Zombie. I don't know why, but I never liked the original Night Of The Living Dead. My 2 favorite zombies are Bub from Day Of The Dead and severely rotted one from the small cemetary in Zombie.

I remember one time when I was about 15, a friend of mine, my cousin, and I watched Return Of The Living Dead part 3, which I think it was the unrated version. Right after we finished watching it, my mom came and told us it was dinner time. When we got to the table we saw it was spaghetti with hamburg and sauce, and we all started to gag.

I love virtually every zombie film ever made on some level or another, there hasn't been one yet that I have disliked.
Of course Romero's film's are among my favorites, and i'm seeing Land of the Dead at 3:00 today, hopefully it will make the cut. I would have to say that my three all time favorites are Return of the Living Dead (it's sequel isn't bad either) Night of the Living Dead 1990 (huge supporter of that one) and Dawn of the Dead 2004, although I still love the originals of the last two.
I really liked the clausterphobic atmosphere generated in Resident Evil and enjoyed Resident Evil Apocolypse alright, the best part about that film were the zombies for me.
Of course, we can't have a zombie appreciation thread without a brief analysis on why they are so frightening, and this may only apply to me, you of course may read something totally different into the whole issue...
Zombies, that is to say the reanimated dead, is really the only other thing left, besides ghost stories, that really terrify me. I hate the whole concept of them, there is something so sick and perverse about the idea of a dead human being, who was good, kind and of strong moral fiber in life, getting up and eating the living.
It's a level of hell that is just unimaginable, i've had many a nightmare about zombies, they are fearful, dirty, vicious creatures that tap into that part of my brain that still remembers all too well of being afraid of the unknown shadows in my room at night. They're groans and moans insult humanity and so does they're very exsistence, God has truly abandoned us in these films and the Earth is now a stinking rot.
These films tell me that we've royally fucked this planet up with our industries, cities and greed to the point where we are being punished for it by this plague. I cannot imagine a more terrifying fate for mankind than what is presented in these films, these people should be dead, but they walk with their hunger for us...what a filthy, truly Satanic end for humanity.

Undead - From the land down under, this one is a little out there with its mix of aliens and zombies. Not too bad, but a couple of stupid scenes really hurt it.
**1/2 out of ****
Goreometer rating: *** out of ****
The Stink of Flesh - Indie undead outing that explores sex after the zombie holocaust. Gore and kinky sex - you want more than that? Amateurish and dumb at times, though it gets ahold of itself in the second half.
**1/2 out of ****
Goreometer rating: *** out of ****
Dead Meat - Irish zombies! A new strain of mad cow disease causes an outbreak of zombies. Can the few survivors stranded in the countryside make it to safety? Doesn't really try anything new (or silly), just good ol' zombie madness.
*** out of ****
Goreometer rating: *** out of ****
They Came Back - Interesting French twist on zombies: just what would we do if the dead started returning? Would their loved ones want them around? Can they get their old jobs back? Do they still have to pay taxes and can they collect social security?
*** out of ****
Goreometer rating: zero out of ****
King of the Zombies - silly, early forties B-movie about a mad scientist on a tropical island creating zombies for the Axis war effort. Silly trifle.
** out of ****
Goreometer rating: zero out of ****
Land of the Dead - George Romero returns to the living dead genre in spectacular fashion. The world is completely overrun by the living dead and the few surviving humans have holed up in a barricaded city. Most of the populace lives in poverty but a select few live in a lavish highrise run by a slimy buisnessman. Mercenaries keep the rich folk supplied with goodies looted from nearby towns and it's in one of these that they incur the wrath of a new breed of zombies - living dead who've retained enough intelligence to plot revenge! Could have been fleshed out more - one gets the feeling much was left out - but still a welcome return to zombieland for Romero.

Don't forget the Evil Dead/EDII/AOD trilogy, Re-Animator, and Pet Semetery...all technically zombie (i.e. "dead come back to life") entries. These particular ones don't include the cannibalism angle, though, so they're a bit distinct from the ones already mentioned.

My favorites in order of preferance...

Carnival Of Souls, NOTLD, Original Dawn, Re-Animator (if that's considered a zombie flick), Day Of The Dead, Return Of The Living Dead, 28 Days Later and Dawn '04.

Haven't seen LOTD though I was greatly anticipating it's release, and am now expecting to be extremely underwhelmed and dissapointed.

My personal favorite underappreciated zombie film would be 1976's http://www.allthingszombie.com/movies/shockwaves.php
My favorite cheese-ball one would be http://www.allthingszombie.com/movies/cspwdt.php
....ugg...it's a cornball bad hair bloody bellbottom jeans good time for all! Although it does have a fairly effective score* and pretty good Makeup FX, the FX are from the same man who did the M-FX in Shock Waves, Alan Ormsby...who also stars in CSPWDT and gives one of the MOST annoying performances I have ever seen. Kill him as quick as you can will be your wish as you watch the film but you will have to wait for any sort of satisfaction for that wish....but in the meantime there are plenty of bad actors to get eaten as well as horribly stereotypical gay "queen" characters, black magic, bad show tunes, hilarious 70's fashions, blood, death, feasting...ENJOY!:emoji_thumbsup: :)
*Well that is if the word effective means high pitched shrill synth squeals...then effective it is!

Recent zombie (old school variety, no flesh-eating) views:
The Plague of the Zombies - Hammer's take on the undead finds an evil English lord using voodoo to create zombies as a work force for his mines.
*** out of ****
Goreometer rating: zero out of ****
Shock Waves - Nazi zombies, Brooke Adams in a bikini, as Kevin noted, ya want something more? (Well, some gore would have been nice...) Still, an effective chiller.

I need to check out Shock Waves. I was going to concentrate on Hammer films for this October's horror challenge, but I think I may switch to Nazi-related horror films.

OTOH, I thought Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things was pretty lousy.

Undead is playing at a theater here. I might go if it lasts another couple of weeks. I have a prepaid ticket to that theater I have to use by the end of the month.

Good question, I suppose so. Although, if you adopt Tom Savini's view, he never liked them being called 'zombies' because the word implied voodoo which wasn't accurate and took something away from the creatures.

I don't understand the big deal about Dawn Of The Dead. People have explained that it had historical significance when it came out because of its social commentary, but that doesn't change the fact that large chunks of it are boring. Yeah, there's the cute bit with the zombies pressed against the display glass in the mall that makes a statement about how silly consumerism is, but most of the movie is just people running, hiding from, or fighting zombies, and it gets boring. The only thing that kept it interesting for me was the amazingly gory special effects. I believe that the best movies are timeless.
This movie may have been original when it came out, but when I watched it for the first time last year, it didn't do much for me. I believe that Shaun Of The Dead is better, and one of the best movies that I saw last year. People can claim that if it wasn't for Dawn Of The Dead , there would be no Shaun Of The Dead , but that doesn't mean the former is better than the letter. I often see art surpass the art that inspired it. For example, many bands become much better than the bands that influenced them when they were growing up. Shaun Of The Dead was more clever, had better pacing and characters, and most importantly, was more entertaining. I also consider Re-Animator , 28 Days Later , and the first two Evil Dead movies to be terrific zombie movies.

Ocean,
have you seen the remake of Dawn of the Dead? It's great, and it may be more to your liking. :emoji_thumbsup:
I know that I like it better than the original, but that's just me.

As far as I'm concerned, Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man) is the best film to ever have anything to do with zombies. Not only that, but its also among my top 10 favorite films, period.
Rupert Everett is absolute perfection in the film. Its hands down the best performance he's ever given. It makes me sad when I think of how far his career has gone down the toilet. His relationship with François Hadji-Lazaro's bumbling Gnaghi character gives the film a refreshing amount of heart. They have great chemistry together, and Lazaro is a real hoot in the role. Then there's Anna Falchi, who is truly hypnotic as the woman of Dellamorte's dreams. Her almost surreal beauty makes it easy to see how he can be so smitten with her.
The zombies look magnificent as well, the motorcycle zombie being a particular favorite. I also have to mention how creepy that Grim Reaper is, as well as how awesome he looks. The scenes with the Reaper are very eerie.
The film's score is exceptionally moody. The more I hear it, the more I love it. Definitely one of the finest scores I've heard. Then there's the locations, which are absolutely gorgeous. What a marvel the cemetery in this film is!
The film is hilarious, yet utterly thought provoking at the same time. Its full of hidden meanings, a great metaphysical look at life, and the existence of things outside our own existence. There's a nice sense of irony underneath it all as well. What Michele Soavi has created here is a fascinating work of pure horror art, and I think the film is flawless. Definitely Soavi's masterpiece.
I already have the Medusa DVD, but I'll double dip for the SE without hesitation.

Check out "Flesh Eater." It stars the original graveyard zombie Bill Hinzman reprising his role from the original "Night of the Living Dead." Made in 1986, it doesn't have the greatest acting, but the gore is superb.

Another underappreciated Zombflik would be http://www.allthingszombie.com/movies/let_sleeping_corpses.php
, a rather odd italian film set in England with some of the earlier examples of extreme Zombie gore that I have seen, the "Receptionist" scene is a classic, the review linked is correct that it is a bit slow at first but the odd scene of a random naked girl running through the streets of London will keep your interest until the dead get boogieing and then.....yuck.
Not a bad Zombie film considering that it is comparatively unknown next to the "classics" of the cult genre and definitely worth looking into for any "Dead-Head".
Another good one is http://www.allthingszombie.com/movies/deathdream.php
, interesting allegory on the war (what is this war turning our children into?) or exploitive use of the war? I don't know but it is a good creepy film at least worth a rental and unlike Clark's previous film (Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things) it actually has some fairly competent acting and scenes that truly stand out as being unusual for the time......yeah, kill that barking ratdog! :emoji_thumbsup:

I'll give more of a plug for Hammer's Plague of the Zombies, one of their best and most unappreciated films. It has one scene (you'll know it when you see it) that is the only Hammer horror moment that really scared me. I love Hammer films for their atmosphere, but this one actually has some thrills. Along with Shock Waves, this proves you don't need a lot of gore to make a good zombie film (though it doesn't hurt).

Between Shawn of the Dead, Plague, and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (though director wasn't a Brit), there really ought to be more British zombie movies.

I have seen Carnival Of Souls listed a few times now but I don't see how that is a "Zombie" film, a "Ghost" film yes but not a Zombie film......you might as well call The Sixth Sense a Zombie film in that case.
