Yamaha RXV800: Increase volume, DB goes to lower minus DB? (1 Viewer)

Confusing, yes. Let me explain better. Let's say that why I turn on the Yammy, the volume reads -45db. And as I increase the volume, the reading goes to -30, for example. Why is volume minus in the first place? I can see that a lower minus does indicate things are getting more positive (increasing volume). But why not start at a positive number for the DB and have that number increase as volume increases???

Reason being, decibels were originally used in telephone circuits to record loss(negative) readings. It is kind of confusing, that's why many manufacturers use some sort or positive Unit to measure volume. Like 1 - 50 or simply a status bar.

Some AVR let you have "- from reference" (which is what you are seeing) or 0-100 I haven't had an AVR without "- to reference" in 15 years.
