And they were right weren't they? After all, next month the Xbox will be four years old and nearing its lifespan and to date Microsoft has successfully lost over $4 billion dollars. As of Q1 2005, the Xbox had a market share only marginally better than Nintendo's GameCube and far behind PS2.
I'd call that a dismal failure personally. Even Saga's Dreamcast had a better looking balance sheet. If it weren't for the fact that Microsoft is bankrolling Xbox it would have gone the way of the dodo bird over two years ago.
On the other hand, being first to market, even without a HD drive will give Xbox a slight advantage. That could change though if the PS3 comes through with their projected specs and doesn't wait until Q4 2005 as some are speculating might happen.
