There are rumors, plus a fairly convincing scan, on various threads indicating that LOTR is, in fact, anamorphic widescreen, but I will not be convinced until someone with more than a few posts (one of this forum's regulars) says that this is true. I'll probably just wait until I see the box myself.

Agreed; there are too many other titles I really want that are presented in the way I want them, in the 4th quarter. I am just looking for an excuse not to buy them. Pan and Scan would do it.

Same here. I'm suspicious of that scan and the lack of any verification just underlines that. When you add that this story was broken by someone with no prior history at DVD Talk, the whole thing just reeks. I'm resigned to not buying this P&S abomination, but will be happy to do so if it turns out it's widescreen.

Just bought it in Indianapolis today. Will be watching it in a few minutes, but I did check and it is widescreen! Packaging is exactly as described in that "other" thread.

Hey fella . . . I bet you're still livin' in your parent's cellar . . . downloading pictures of Sarah Michelle Gellar . . . and posting "Me too!" like some brain-dead AOL-er . . . I should do the world a favor and cap ya' like Old Yeller . . . you're just about as useless as MPEGs [sic] to Hellen Keller.

The latest that I have been able to determine is that LOTR IS anamorphic and widescreen, the other two are NOT.

I just watched the first hour of LOTR (animated obviously).
Widescreen - Yes.
Anamorphic - ? I don't have a 16:9 TV.
I would assume however that it is anamorphic... yes, I know that many of you would argue "...in the past..." or "... it's warner...", but I would bet a fair bit of money that it is in fact anamorphic.
Happy trails...
Moe.

Moe, if you want to check for 16:9 enhancement, change your player's output to 16: and you should see everything looking tall and thin (if the disc is enhanced).

We have the R1 version of LotR. It IS anamorphic, okay?
But now my wife's gonna be sore when she hears about the goodies on the R2 release. Oh, shoot...

If by the other two you mean The Hobbit and Return of the King they are 4x3 just like they should be.
Yes, these "other" two are both 4:3.
I was kind of disappointed at the mono soundtrack on The Hobbit, but I still love the movie. I noticed that in certain scenes, there seemed to be some sound FX missing...odd. I wonder where the soundtrack they used came from?
