Why didn't "Casino" get the recognition "Goodfellas" did? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, what everybody else said. :)
Seriously, I really haven't given any thought to making comparisons between the two. Personally on just initial thinking, I like Goodfellas a lot better, if for any other reason than that it wraps up quicker than Casino.

What helps Casino along is it's setting. It's set in the vibrant under (and over)world of Las Vegas, giving the movie a glitz and glamour (which Stone complements perfectly) that is absent from the intense relationships in Goodfellas.

Even the violence in Casino is more grander, more OTT than in Goodfellas, in keeping with the surroundings. Like DeNiro flying through the air over the opening credits. Like heads in vices and eyes-a-poppin'. Like a few hoods burying a battered and bloody Pesci while he's still breathing. Now that's cold, man.

I'm more of a fan of Goodfellas, although I like Casino as well. As others have pointed out, it didn't feel quite as fresh as its predecessor, which admittedly may have just been a matter of being second out the gate.

I feel that Pesci's performance in Casino was arguably better than his work in Goodfellas, but again, the superficial similarities between the two characters prevented him from getting much recognition for the latter performance.

"About the time I'm gettin' out of jail, hopefully you'll be gettin' out of your coma. And guess what? I'll crack your fuckin' head open again. 'Cuz I'm fuckin' stupid. I don't give a fuck about jail. That's what I do."

I just felt like typing that. Love that dialogue.

I think Goodfellas was more easily accesable to your average movie audiance, and because of that it's become A more popular movie over the years. I don't really have A favorite between the two I love them both.

I liked it better. I saw it four times in the theater. I've never seen any other movie that many times in a theater before. I still don't know what it was that captivated me, and still captivates me about Casino but the main reason I probably like it better than Goodfellas is because there is so much more of Deniro and Pesci in it and it's unique Las Vegas setting, which no other mob movie has ever been entirely set in. And damn, did they do an amazing job recreating the 70's!
