Why 12" drivers can't be musical in the 40-80hz? (1 Viewer)

I just got home and I'm trying to straighten it out now with some weights. Or, I might try oval endcaps.
Either way,thanks,Pat!

Hey does anyone here have a good 8" they will trade me even
up for my AV-12 ? It's just not fast enough for me.. I have
tried everything... Pushing it by hand, kicking on it,
dynamite.. It's just so slow at 20Hz.. It feels like it's
only moving about 20 cycles per second? :D
Ohh wait! I have two Urban Audio 8's in the basement I used
to run Isobaric Bandpass in my convertible LeBaron (didn't
have room for real subs).. Maybe I can build a Dipole with
those ehh? :b

having owned stereo 10 subs, stereo 12 subs, a single 12, a dual 15, and a single 15, I am NOT convinced of the "smaller driver is faster" deal.
the biggest influence I have experienced on if a sub sounds fast or slow is how well the room is setup.
..and yes...as usual, I am late as hell on this thread. ...but I had to my two counterfit cents ;)

As far as not needing truly low extension unless you listen to organ music, this is also not true.

Try playing track 11 from Patricia Barber's 'Modern Cool'.

Although it is supposed to be merely a string bass, which shouldn't go much below 40Hz, there is definately much lower stuff there, like they whacked a subharmonic synthesizer on it.

The new SACD of 'Dark Side of the Moon' has something similar.

I suspect that with the increasing popularity of subs via HT this will become more common.

Rich,
Hey I think you are onto something here..
I wonder if those $800.00 Scan Speak Revelator Tweets would
do ok at 20Hz? They even have a phase plug! :D
I always thought it was "Wider is Better"

Ah, thanks for the laugh guys! He used two of my favorite clueless audiofool words to describe bass - "fast" and "musical." Sports car and a dump truck? Pffft.... how about a 'heavy' AA fueler and a 'light' moped? And smaller is better? Ummm, errr... that's not what SHE said! :D

I gather from this that subs can reach linearly above 80Hz, but they have the flattest response from about 30-80. I looked back on my Titanix 10" and 12" spec sheets and they both start to roll off after 80Hz by a few dB.
