Who LOVES movie/Tv soundtrack releases ? (1 Viewer)

The whole concept of what a movie/Tv soundtrack has changed over the years...from those composed by a few top Hollywood specialists, who had a real grip on the Business for along time...all the way to putting together seemingly disparate music artists to create a whole ambience complimentary to the Film or Tv Show.

We've all heard the album "Quadrophenia" by the Who, and the soundtrack to the film...two different things, right ?

I was just watching the DVD of the film "Chasers" by Dennis Hopper...music composed by Dwight Yoakum and "somebody"

...and while I don't give a hoot about Dwight Yoakum, it was the first time I actually listened to some of his music. Interesting concept here ! I kind of like some of his music!

"Rushmore" is one of my favorites.

It's almost a Guilty Pleasure to like film/Tv soundtracks!

What are some of your favorite soundtracks...ANY music genre ?

I like the Rushmore soundtrack, too.

One of my favorites of the past couple of years is Ghost Dog: The Album, the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. The film's score was created by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. The soundtrack album is comprised of the film's score turned into hip-hop songs. Which is to say that in the film, it's just the instrumentals (except for one, I think, when street musicians on the screen are rapping lyrics), whereas the album has full-fledged songs.

The artists involved are the Wu-Tang Clan and many of their various proteges. The songs flow one into the other, creating a unified whole that is thematically consistent. In between some of the songs are spoken-word clips from the film, with star Forrest Whitaker quoting bits of wisdom from the Samurai Code. It's all a nice package, and a great hip-hop album as well as a well-defined soundtrack.

Other fairly recent favorites include High Fidelity (a good collection of the music that "record snobs" like the film's characters would listen to, including tracks by Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder, and more obscure stuff by the likes of John Wesley Harding, Stereolab and Royal Trux) and Made (a little too schizophrenic, jumping from Dean Martin to metal to hip-hop to Hawaiian music, but there are some great tracks on there).

As for TV, I really liked the second soundtrack to The Sopranos, entitled Peppers & Eggs.

The Big Blue by Eric Serra what an amazing soundtrack, I buy a lot of soundtrack music I find them to be well composed and excellent recordings for example Gladiator is another favourite.

I don't know why it's a guilty pleasure to have/want/buy soundtracks. If you watch a particular film or show and really like the song or score that is playing, why not go and purchase the soundtrack? I am a sucker for soundtracks and some of my favorites are Casino, Natural Born Killers and Goodfellas. If I had the money or inclination to purchase all the albums that contain the various songs, then it might be different. But, since I want that one song because it reminds me of the scene or film, I buy the soundtrack.

Most soundtracks today are just a collection of songs from the past - which is fine, but really isn't much of an accomplishment.
The soundtracks that usually interest me are the original scores. Some beautiful scores have been created for film, and I have no problem listening to them on their own.
Two of the more recent original scores I love listening to are Magnolia (Jon Brion) and The Thin Red Line (Hans Zimmer)

I like instrumental soundtracks. I love the soundtracks John Williams scores. He's the best in my opinion, scoring some of the most memorable of the 20th century. I don't usually but soundtracks that feature rock, rap, R&B, or whatever. For soundtracks I only like the instrumental type.

I also enjoy instrumental soundtracks. Some are because it reminds me of a part in the movie. Some are just plain good music with or without a movie (The Last Samurai for example). I'm slowly building my library of soundtracks along with my DVD library.

On a semi-related note, this has been one of the few shortcomings I've found with the iTunes Music Store. There are quite a few soundtracks to major movies I would like, but they aren't available. Maybe eventually their selection will increase.
