Yes, the Blu-ray is a major upgrade from the DVD, shame about the DVNR, esp. in a war movie, which could do with looking a bit gritty. I thought that I read here that Fox had done a new 4k scan (I could be wrong). The thing is, if Fox didn't release it last year (the 40th anniversary of D Day), then they're never going to release it. I suppose one hope is that they could license it out to Twilight Time.

I haven't seen this film, but with D-Day coming soon it reminded me:

Does anyone think we will ever get a proper Bluray (without the DNR) of it?

Has anyone heard anything?

No, but I keep listening. It's an early format attempt to make it pretty and pleasing to the HDTV buying masses. Who wants to see grain and texture. They have since learned that was not the way to go. Fox fixed Patton, so you know they were listening. I'm assuming it's the famous cost issue and the probable returns for this title.

I was in the mood for this last night & looked at the Blu-ray (& it is a huge step up from the DVD), it does look a bit creaky these days, some really bad dialogue & some not so hot performances (I think the Duke is the best thing in it). The picture is SO clean & every now & again you see the ghost of a scratch (or lots of scratches), they just come & go (most people would never notice, I had an entire working life looking out for this stuff). So...I think the main fault here is that they turned the scratch & splodge removable part of the DVNR right up, it does the job, but if turned up too much it gives a plastic look to the picture. A wet gate scan followed by a de-spot session would do the same thing, I'm wondering if they did that on the newer scan, this could be one of the best looking b/w transfers on Blu-ray if Fox ever got around to it.

I think that's what happened to the UK edition of Zulu too.

Even with Mr. Finn saying Fox was not looking at this title at this time, I still trust Fox (the studio, not the news channel) to get to it. I would think they still have time to get it ready for a 55th Anniversary edition in 2017. Obviously they need to do a "Patton" on it, and fix the disappearing German at the beginning of the film, and I enjoy both present commentaries, but what else would everyone like to see as part of this new package? How about some original type artwork?

I was under the impression that Fox did do another scan of it, but I can't see them bothering to release it. It was rereleased on the 70th Anniversary of D Day, new cover, same old transfer, so if they didn't release it then, they're never going to release it (as with Die Hard, they don't want to junk any of their old stock). I went over to Normandy a few months ago, visited the beaches & looked around Sainte-Mere-Eglise, I think they must have shot that stuff there, as I could recognize the square & the buildings around it, & in the church there's a beautiful stained glass window featuring the soldiers, (I also had a look at the Bayeux Tapestry a few miles away).

HTV / Illuminate worked on The Longest Day and Patton and it was their much praised process at the time that specifically had as a goal to eliminate that nasty grain. So it was not a byproduct of overzealous automated scratch removal. For Zulu it is said that the latter was the case and with a bit of grain being visible here and there in Zulu I would think that this is a possible explanation. Somebody wanted to do it cheap and fast and look what we have now.

I hope that The Longest Day will be sold out soon so that Fox can release a proper verson that I can actually stand to watch.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. It would have been the perfect time for Fox to commemorate this day with a 4K remastered release of this movie. Instead we're still stuck with the original abomination. This movie deserves better.

It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten.

Was there a problem?

You actually reviewed it when it came out: link To sum up your conclusion then: "While I enjoyed seeing The Longest Day on Blu-Ray, I was unable to recognize it as film. There was no look of the cinema, except for some occasional white vertical scratches that remain." and "Facial tonalities as they are, take on the look similar to wax figures in Madame Tussauds."

It's really bad, it's one of the worst dnr'ed discs out there.

Watched my remastered Blu-ray of Patton last night and it looked great. Will look at the Blu-ray of The Longest Day this evening. Last time I saw it a few years ago I thought the picture looked good.

Terrific movie and along with Is Paris Burning two of the best. If re-made today it would have Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie parachuting in and saving us all from the Nazis.

I liked Is Paris Burning? with the great ending aerial footage of Paris in 1966 when the film was made. The Paramount dvd looks fine but I hope it will be released on Blu-ray.

I just bought the HD Digital on iTunes for $4.99. It's still on sale for that price. I started watching it this morning and it looks good with the correct aspect ratio.

I know it has a shedload of noise reduction, making it look as smooth as a baby's bum, but it still looks miles better than the old DVD. I looked at it a few weeks ago, as I was reading a book about D-Day (D-Day: The Soldiers Story by Giles Milton, a great read). As with a lot of faults, as the film goes on, you stop noticing them. Overall it's a very good film, there's good & bad, some of the dialogue is a bit wince inducing & the Omaha Beach landing is quite bloodless, but a lot of the other stuff is great, especially that amazing helicopter shot when they're attacking the casino. An interesting thing about war films made in the fifties & sixties, is that many of the actors took part in the war, for instance Richard Todd actually was part of the glider troops that took the bridge (he got a promotion for the film, in charge of the unit now).
