Sure, but that's a different line. You are saying the air can't edit movies, I'm telling you I'm doing it right now. I want a hybrid too, when it hits I will be first in line, until then th 13 works.
I absolutely believe the 17" hybrid will be 6 months to a year later than the 15, so be prepared for that.

Maybe you misunderstood me.

I never said the "air" can't edit movies. I just need a laptop with
much more powerful processing and GPU power so it doesn't choke
when I try to encode and multitask. That is why the Pro line still
comes out as my top choice.

I believe by September, the latest, the 17" will be available.

Neither you or me can know for certain. I just don't think they will
make people wait a year for the 17" version.

We need a new 13" MacBook and planned to get one in two or three weeks which would be right in this time frame anyway

Tony: thats the rumor, only Apple knows. The new chips from intel are late but should be here soon.
Ron: move to FCPX and forget about encodes, unless you are still using tape that is. Which I recommend on genral principle.

Sam,

I am using AVCHD hard drive transfer.

I find iMovie very intuitive. Well...that's not exactly true. When
they upgraded it 2-3 years ago it took a bit of playing around to get
all the fundamentals down. Now I am really good at editing with it.

Is Final Cut Pro X just as intuitive? I don't want to move to a
more professional editing suite that will be difficult to figure out.

Besides, correct me if I am wrong, isn't Final Cut Pro X the
version so many Mac users hated?

Not nearly as intuitive but much more powerful. Many FCP -7- users hated it because ut tok features away they were used to, similar to the imovie transitin you remember. They are coming around tho and Apple has patched many but not all of the gaps.

and master a more complicated piece of movie software.

I'll stick with iMovie for now.

Got Final Cut Pro X.

Learning to use it via Lynda.com training.

Funny. The program seems to have parts of iMovie '06 where there
was more work involved in laying down audio tracks and building a movie
timeline. Then it has the streamlined features of iMove '11.

So, based on the fact I used to do a lot of the harder layouts of iMovie
'06, I am finding this program isn't as cumbersome to use as I had thought.

But seriously, the ability to copy a track to disk and start using it immediately should save you hours. So you'll make it up in no-time the time you spend learning it. It's folks like you and me it was aimed at, not the video pros who had been using it all along, which is what caused the big disconnect. Fortunately they are fixing some of the missing pieces the pros can't live wihtout patch by patch.

When FCP X came out, I was following along a bit. My impression is that it's a very good tool for the serious amateur. Learning curve aside, I'd guess it would be a good tool for Ron / HTF use.

The MAJOR problem I find with FCP X right now is the lack
of iDVD.

Sure, you can quickly burn a movie to DVD without all that
encoding time you would have to do using iDVD.....

On the other hand, you don't get those nice, robust menus
that really add a quality touch to your project.

....at least that is what I am initially finding with this program
and I hope that I am overlooking something.

If I can't import my movie into a program that has elaborate
menu templates then I am no longer interested in using FCP X.

Lots of speculation concerning the release of the 15" Macbook Pro over the next
few weeks.

Nothing, however, on the 17". Something tells me that I may be waiting for a
Summer release.

On another front, I am certain Sam will be happy that there is speculation that
the new iMac will be going with a non-reflective screen. As long as there is
still a choice of screen, I have no complaint.

Seriously tho I'm not really in the market for an iMac, unless TB drives start magically becoming less expensive and more prevalent. Hopefully we'll see a matte cinema display tho, count me in for one of those.
