I just got a new HDTV and wanted to know what progressive scan player will give me the best picture quality for under $100?

Also does upconversion really give you that much improvement over Progressive scan?

Under $100, there isn't going to be a big difference. I like Panasonic at the $100 point, and Sony should be OK too. You can pick up the F87 5 disc changer for about $120 or less.

I have to disagree with John. When Secrets tested a bunch of DVD players a while back, the $60 Toshiba SD-3960 was top rated. Other testers have also found Toshiba to deliver a better progressive scan image than most others. The current Toshiba SD-3980 is about $54 at Best Buy.

The best upconverting players run around $200. I would let that go for now.

true upscale players are not a eye poping wow difference over a decent progressive scan player but I have owned a few and my Sony 975 blows my Zenith DVB-318 (both upscaled) away when it comes to detail. the Sony 975 also has the best 480p I have seen at the price and even better than my old panny XP50 which was considered a really nice 480p machine.

the sony is def the best I have owned yet!

There are 2 versions of the toshiba 3960. The one reviewed by secrets was discontinued and replaced with one with the same name and look but different chipset.
