Thank goodness! I was starting to feel like "one of the old guys" around here!

Now I don't feel so "old"!

quote:I miss the science and skeptic and ghost story discussions.

I miss the fights over cables, and the effect they had on your theater.. when people would get so mad at you, they'd call you up, at home, from Florida to say, Kansas just to make their point and chat up someone they had spoken with on the HTF.

Or, when everyone universally agreed, finally, that the CLD-99 was the greatest Laserdisc Player of all time (despite those heretics that kept going with CLD-704s altered by MSBTech.. Bah! I say)

When giant discussions began on whether or not Sony Playstations would burn up a big screen TV..

When everyone raced to by a pornographic DVD (Bobby Sox) because it was one of the first DVDs to use "multi-angle" which so many at the beginning thought would add cool new ways to look at films (boy was that a feature that tanked outside of porn)

When we all debated whether or not Disney would ever port some of it's "classics" to DVD, after the amazing Toy Story CAV LD Box Set (which is still incredible in that it provided you all of the Pixar shorts in CAV)

When you could actually have a discussion over who put out the best SVHS video cassette (we loosely agreed it was the Maxell Broadcast Quality hardbox, and I bought many, primarily from the source at the time, http://www.disc-o-tape.com/ )

When the biggest online marketer of films was Ken Crane's laserdiscs, and people would go to Ken Cranes just to meet other forum members and pick up "cool new imports"

Sarah, JulieK is very much still with us. If I may speak for her, Ms. K's duties as a navigator for the Mars rovers currently exploring the Red Planet have necessitated her absence from these boards — for a most-worthy cause. And she is starting work on upcoming NASA/JPL planetary projects. JB

Man, the Toy Story LD talk really made me flash back to the very early days for me at HTF when I was still looking for LDs. Heck, that first year in Houston (97) I was probably buying more LDs than DVDs still. It's not like there were that many DVD titles to buy anyway.

It really hasn't been that long (at least by the standards of anyone over 30) since I was browsing the LD shelves. I remember failing to pull the trigger on the Star Wars SE LD box set until there were no more left (I ended up getting the Japanese imports).

I remember almost buying the Jap. import of Pulp Fiction from home town Lasers Edge when they had it at least 6 months before the US release. In the end I waited and got the butt kicking Criterion LD instead.

As slow starting as DVDs were, in the end they really blew up rather quickly.

Well I might qualify though I'm probably not recognized by most of the oldsters. I was the guy always popping up in the "what are the best LD players out there?" threads. Ld was something I was PASSIONATE about....DVDs are great and all, but they just don't inspire that overwhelming madne.....er,loyalty that laserdisc did. I also miss seeing Rachael, the big disc cat, and of course Knapp. You can date yourself accordingly if you think laserdisc was great, or "Why do people buy those HUGE, heavy discs?"
wink.gif
"They're too expensive and take up too much space!"
biggrin.gif

And I ABSOLUTELY miss the DD versus DTS threads.

Nothing like a thread that proably got people censured and/or kicked out of HTF.

Corbin, the "big disc cat" is a frequent contributor in the Music section. She's there all the time.

Some of the wise men of lore, like Walter Kittel (hey Walter, remember we tried to coin the term W480? :) ) can still be seen posting rather regularly here, although less frequently. But there are some others, like Mitty, who I spot only very seldom now (although I know he's still around!).

Cees - Your post brought me out of the woodwork; and yes I remember.

I still lurk a lot, but haven't posted much lately since work, dabbling with cascading style sheets, reading ( SF ) and the new television season have all conspired to reduce my film viewing. ( I wonder what happened to Mitty - one of my favorite HTF members. )

- Walter.

I think that's a common explanation. I'm happy with the HT stuff I got so not much contribution in the hardware sections. I rarely buy DVDs, so I don't really go there. "After Hours" has been moderated to death (not necessarily a bad thing) so I don't participate here much anymore. And since having a baby boy a while back I haven't watched a lot of movies either... of course, that's also because I have a backlog of about 80 "Dallas" episodes on the Tivo recorded off of SOAPnet, and I'm trying to catch up with that.

Since the show is still on every day, I'm expecting to get back to watching movies sometime next year.

I still post pretty much every day in the TV section of the forum, and read "Deals", "Coupons and bargains" and "Music" frequently.

Of course, I don't know if I'm counted in the "everyone" group, so this might be in the wrong thread.

I can't believe you're actually admitting that in public

Ditto, I've had my speakers from '96 and my trusty old Sony DB930 receiver from '98. It still knocks the socks of the unsuspecting visitor when I give my demos though. They think I'm an HT god.

I think part if it may just be what we feared for so long...DVD has become too mainstream. We as a group used to distinguish ourselves by being above VHS users. Now, VHS is all but dead, and the DVD format is prime and centre. Everyone has it.

Perhaps when HD-DVD or whatever the next big disc based format is comes out, HTF will experience a boom once again. Those of us who adopt the new format early will go through the facination and addiction of re-buying movies again and will start chatting it up once again. I'm looking forward to those days!

I just hope I have enough money...

That's awfully elitist, and in my case, completely wrong.

You "feared" this, all while bitching about J6P?

I think it's great people are becoming more informed. I thought that was part of our mission.
