When people come over to watch a movie at my house, I provide them with a 1 page menu to select a film from. I can't get the formatting right to replicate it here, but it provides basic information about each film (title, color/b&w, year, actors, time, etc.)

I try to provide a variety of films to choose from, and even though the people who come over have very different tastes in film, I've yet to find anyone who didn't find at least 1 movie on the list they'd like to see.

But of course, you guys might be different. :)

Anyway, I was just curious which (if any) of the films you'd pick if I invited you over. The following is the menu (titles only) that I would create if you came over today:

ACTION/ADVENTURE
dr. no
the hunt for red october
lethal weapon
mission: impossible
patton
raiders of the lost ark
tora! tora! tora!
true lies

COMEDY
the american president
caddyshack
dead men don't wear plaid
desk set
good morning, vietnam
the goodbye girl
heaven can wait
in the navy
1941
pretty woman
stir crazy
vegas vacation
a very brady sequel

DRAMA
breakfast at tiffany's
city of angels
the firm
lifeboat
mr. smith goes to washington
the shop around the corner
to have & have not

HORROR
aliens

MUSICAL
a funny thing happened on the way to the forum
hans christian andersen
help!

MYSTERY
charade
the general's daughter
l.a. confidential
the lady vanishes
marnie
the paradine case
the postman always rings twice
shadow of the thin man

SCIENCE FICTION
contact

SILENT
the circus

WESTERN
the magnificent seven

Thi,

I think you're missing the point. You have to pick a movie off my list. If you want to watch Cries & Whispers, go to Brook's house.

Hmm Let's see. What would I want to watch at Kaplan's house?

Own it, so I don't need to see it at Kaplan's house
dr. no
the hunt for red october
lethal weapon
patton
raiders of the lost ark
true lies
the shop around the corner
to have & have not
aliens
charade
l.a. confidential

the magnificent seven

Seen 'em, mediocre to good films (didn't like the good ones enough to own) but don't need to watch 'em again at Kaplan's house

mission: impossible
tora! tora! tora!
caddyshack
lifeboat
mr. smith goes to washington
the lady vanishes
marnie
the paradine case
the postman always rings twice

I own the majority of those titles. Those that I don't have are titles I'm not really interested in viewing, so I'd rewatch...

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

I'd pick either Marnie, Contact or The Circus...but I don't think your menu is quite as varied as you might think it is.

Just a little constructive criticism ;)

Well, as I said I limit it to a single page, and focus mostly on films in my collection I haven't seen in a long time. So, in this case there weren't any foreign films, but that doesn't mean they won't show up as options at a later date. Obviously there are lots of films that would never show up since they aren't in my collection, but you'd be hard pressed to pick a genre or a time period that wouldn't show up at some point. As I said, although it's clear that some here would never want to come to my house to watch a film, I've never had trouble with anyone picking a film - the last one chosen was Vertigo.

Probably Lifeboat since I haven't seen it or Marnie since I don't own it and haven't seen it in awhile.

If my wife was along we'd have to watch A Very Brady Sequel, but that would be ok too.

Well at Martin's house I'd watch something I'd never seen before like Celine & Julie Go Boating, or something I really like like Open City.

I started to answer like Jim K, but that methodology left me with to many to choose from so I will eliminate the own its and the good reason I don't own its and choose from the rest. I would choose True Lies or Dead Men Don't wear Plaid... Both I have seen and enjoyed but do not own..Depending on Kaplan's gear, i would pick one or the other.

Since Kaplan was gracious enough to invite me, I wouldn't want to risk a good time with an expermiment on a new film, I haven't seen. Of course, as a gracious guest, I would defer to our host...

So what would Kaplan choose if we all said "Gee, I don't know whatever you want to watch, George"

Well, I pretty much cycle through my movies, and next on my list is To Have & Have Not, so that would be it. :)

George, if I came over to your house, I have a feeling the only thing I'd be watching is your head exploding.
