That really is the rub isn't it for all the people, myself included, who bought a first gen blu-ray player.

I probably upgraded my SD DVD player at least five times since I bought into that format, so I really fail to see the difference here. Afterall, my first DVD player didn't output DTS.

Do you really think Toshiba is going to stop making HD DVD players with new technology after the second generation? An HD DVD player that decodes DTS-MA internally will be the next big thing to get HD DVD owners to upgrade their players I imagine.

All companies add features and support. This is the "name of the game", and unless you're new to early adoption, you should be used to it by now.

Finally, your G1 BD player will still play the movie, which is all that really matters to me anyway.

Oh this is very true. I've probably owned 10 sd DVD players. And when I can walk into walmart and pick up a Blu-ray player for under $100 I probably won't care. However in the mean time I doubt I would be able to play Dragon's Lair on my Samsung, which kinda sucks. Fortunately I'll be able to get it on HD DVD in August.

Also I'm one of those people for whom extra features are a big factor in deciding to buy a particular title or not. I actually watch the extra features.

Doug, I could be wrong, but I don't think that the PiP features of BD Profile 1.1 have anything to do with the playability (is that a word? :)) of Dragon's Lair on your Samsung. Do make Dragon's Lair work BD-J was used. BD-J has been supported on BD from the beginning. Witness the Pirates movies menus, and many Lion's Gate titles' menus for examples.

That could very well be true. However having said that the menus on Pirates chunk along like a bloated cow! If the game goes along at that speed I would take me years to complete.

If playing games are that important you really should've picked up a PS3 instead of a standalone. Just a thought.

No problems with my Pirates menus BTW.

Its actually not at all. I'm just interested in it as a classic game. I'll just pick it up on HD DVD. I wouldn't spend that much on a blu-ray player. I only bought it because it was an open box item and I got it for $200. But it really doesn't have the horse power to really do the java menu's right.

I do not believe any title in either format has sold 100k. The original 100k numbers on Casino Royale where ship to, not sales numbers. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

The Departed, according to Warners has hit 100,000. But that counting both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

And if you think about it, those numbers are truly sad. Between this place, AVS, and another place I post I swear all those sales went to all the posters between those three sites. Makes you feel in small company when probably the latest Larry the Cable Guy DVD sold more than most HD discs.

Heck, I'm still waiting for Forbidden Planet, The Perfect Storm and Casablanca, all non IME titles...

Yeah, it's too bad Warner is stonewalling on some of these films for BD only owners. I decided to get Casablanca and Forbidden Planet on HD DVD. They both look very good. Warner is supposedly neutral. They should act like it and give BD owners a crack at owning these classic films.

:)

Let's hope most HD-DVD owners are smart enough to know that it will take more than just an update to player firmware before Fox & Disney start releasing on HD-DVD.

No, not really. Disney and Fox have made no pretense of being neutral. Therein lies my biggest problem with the delay/ommission of Warner's classic non-IME titles on BD.

Well I think in many ways BD is an afterthought for Warners. For the most part the discs are designed for HD DVD and then just ported over to BD. There is nothing really wrong with it but its clear that they aren't putting much effort into Blu-ray. Just based on their actions I would say that HD DVD seems to be their preferred format.

When did WB announce "classic non-IME titles on BD"?
I don't believe they ever did, so its impossible to have a "delay".
WB plans to release all titles on both formats, there is no "omission".
BD is not ready for WB, not the other way around!
