I'd have to agree that the Miata IS indeed a sports car. It follows in the old school British tradition of 2 seat, roadsters. Let's not forget that most of America is HP hungry (myself included). The rest of the world isn't into big motors and huge HP numbers the way the US is.
I haven't driven a Miata, but every review I've read has praised it's handling. And I've always assumed it to be a sports car from day one. And I would classify the MR2 Spyder as one as well... they are two, AFFORDABLE sports cars.
