I watched this the other night for the second time. I saw him take a pill a couple times. What exactly are they?

I've always thought they were "Poppers" (Amyl nitrite) in capsule-like vials that he breaks open and inhales through the nose, rather than swallows like pills. It gives you an intense, temporary "rush." I've been out of the drug culture for decades, so I don't know what specific kind he was taking, but obviously it had some nasty effects.

I've been so sure they were poppers that I'd have to watch the movie again to see if it's something he's actually swallowing, but I don't think so. Nothing swallowed can give a reaction that quickly.

I don't know what kind of drug it was, but he definitely swallowed it. The shots of him taking the drugs plainly showed him putting the pill in his mouth and cracking it open with his teeth. Perhaps thats why the effect was so immediate.

Interviews at the time said it was just an imaginary drug. Oldman wanted to do something memorable with it, and he sure did. But it is not meant to be anything specific.

Interesting. In the DVD documentary of Blue Velvet, I believe that they mention that amyl nitrate was the gas that Dennis Hopper's character inhales.

Well worth it no matter how many times youve seen it.
Look for it if you have all the necessary stuff.
