[rant]RELEASE THE HOUNDS![/rant]
[c] [/c]
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, the week of the release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website...but it COULD still be in-stores!

* Wow! Big catalog week, eh? You guys were wondering why I didn't post until so late in the day...I was busy getting all those prices!! :D I'm sorry I scared anyone (my wife told me about that thread she responded to!), but when we saw how much time this was gonna take, I had to go take care of the food shopping first! Yep, Mike: this is the price I pay for being so dependable. Lotsa stuff, though...I hope you think it was worth the wait! Mark's wallet can stop quivering now and Malcolm can go hit the mall!
* There are, as you can see in the Roundup, a number of Modified-for-your-TV ("MAR") releases this week! It is sad that I won't be picking these titles up, no matter how desirable they are, because they are presented in a form that is incompatible with the Original Theatrical Presentation. I am boycotting these releases, and encourage you to do so as well. Let's make sure that everyone at Disney know how upset we are with this (they are responsible for all of the MAR releases listed above except for A Midnight Clear...that's Columbia TriStar's mess). The biggest crime is Muppet Treasure Island, which looks horrible in the aspect format it is being released in. Please complain, per DaViD Boulet:
Call 1-800-72-DISNEY & email [email protected] and tell them you won't buy P/S-only DVDs!!!
[email protected] (Brian Henson's email address)
Vote for Muppet Treasure Island and Christmas Carol in 16x9 WS on DVD!!! (also call/email Disney)
Sign The Petition
* I left Mr. Wrong off the Roundup for two reasons: 1) Noone ever seems to like it, and 2) I'm not sure if it is MAR or OAR; the info seems to be hidden everywhere so I must assume it is MAR. Though, Gordy is hidden the same way...but LukeB, HTFer and owner of what I consider to be the DEFINATIVE Disney DVD site, tells me Gordy is OAR. I just don't know if Mr. Wrong is OAR, though, and I suspect noone cares (I sure don't). If anyone cares, let me know and if it is OAR I'll post the info.
* I am also skipping the South Park: Insult to Injuries release this week, since Warner already has season sets in-the-works for SP. Heck, I'd be skipping this even if season sets WEREN'T on-the-way! :p
* I cannot tell all of you how long I have waited for Victor/Victoria. Finally, it shall be mine! I feel about this title like Ron Epstein feels about Saturday Night Fever...it's THAT serious. I'm listening to the soundtrack right now, in fact. :D But, by an extreme act of will, I will forego getting this on street date to celebrate my wife's birthday with her. But come Wednesday, it...shall...be...[rant]MINE![/rant]
* Borders has Victor/Victoria for $14.99; I might get it there, unless Costco beats their price at the last second. As you've noticed, I've removed at this time the Borders column from the Roundup. Their prices were routinely high, their service is a joke at times, and it's just too much work to do yet another store for every item in the Roundup (especially when it's 30-40 titles like this week!). I'm not saying they'll never be included again, but only when deemed to be worthwhile.
* With any specially marked Scooby-Doo title, including all three new releases this week, you get a "FREE SCOOBY DOO CHILD'S MOVIE PASS (or 6.50 off any admission) to see the live-action movie". This is the wording at the K-Mart ad, but it is true anywhere, though...it is worded differently, but is also mentioned on the Best Buy circular. But I was planning on dragging my son to see the Scooby movie, so this will work out. :emoji_thumbsup:
* Best Buy will take $5 off the total of a purchase of any 2 of the 3 new Scooby-Doo DVDs. They also have an Artisan deal where you save $5 by purchasing any two titles from a list, which includes: any of the new Rambo SE discs, Good Advice, Doors 2-disc SE, Total Recall SE (new "unlimited" packaging shown), Basic Instinct SE (new "unlimited" packaging shown)...all of these for $12.99 each. Also on the list for $14.99 each are the Universal Soldier/Replicant 2-pack and the Pi/Requiem For A Dream - Director's Unrated Cut 2-pack. Folks who are into TV-on-DVD can get the first seasons of M*A*S*H and The Simpsons for $27.99 each, too.
* K-Mart's ad is showing Mothman Prophecies for $19.95, and all three new Scooby-Doo titles for $14.95 each.
* Target has all three Scooby-Doo new releases for $14.99, and Mothman Prophecies for "Low Price". They also have several older titles for $12.99 each, including many of the ones newly marked-down this week (America's Sweethearts and There's Something About Mary hit me in the face). They also have several ads for DVD-playing devices (including X-Box and PS2 at their new $199.99 prices) on the first couple of pages of the ad. Deeper in they show an Audiovox 6.8" Portable DVD Player for $399.99; that doesn't sound too bad.
* But speaking of that sort of thing, Wal-Mart's newest ad circular shows a deal on page 3 for what they say is a 5.8" Portable DVD Player, only available online from WALMART.COM, that is a mere $199.77! So what's the catch? It's an Apex brand, and their site says it is a 4:3 screen with a 4.5" viewing area. :rolleyes:Too small for my poor eyes, but if anyone's interested, go for it! Maybe this will encourage lower-end models of this sort of thing, as I really didn't want to pay $400-$700 for a decent one. ;)
* Wal-Mart also has a big display setting up in store with all of these WB titles (some on the list of new markdowns this week)...[rant]all for just $9.96[/rant]. Most of these are OAR, so no issues like the Christmas sell-off of many MARred items for under six dollars. I picked up The Long Kiss Goodnight finally, and also saw these: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Spawn, The Last Boy Scout, Kelly's Heroes, Dirty Harry (didn't notice if it was the old or new version; sorry!), Eraser, Deliverance, The Searchers, 8 Seconds, The Wild Bunch, Tin Cup, Any Given Sunday, The Wedding Singer, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, The Fugitive (also didn't notice if it was the old or new version; sorry again!), *61, Enter The Dragon, Maverick, Cool Hand Luke, The Green Berets, Lethal Weapon - Director's Cut, Lethal Weapon 2 - Director's Cut, and Lethal Weapon 3 - Director's Cut.

Great job! Thanks as always!

Question: the $9.96 Any Given Sunday at Wal-Mart... is this the original release or the 2-disc SE?

Uhhh...it was in a snapper? Seriously, that's all I know...I didn't look. And the employees were eyeing me suspiciously as I wrote titles down. In fact, I "borrowed" (and returned) a pen from their counter, and it turned out to be their counterfeit-bill-checking-pen! :)

Wow! That's some research there! This has to set some record as your longest roundup.
Ironic though that a DVD-addict like myself is not going to be purchasing any of the new titles this week, though. Just as well, having recently bought an XBox my pocketbook could use the rest. ;)

Good catch there, Carlo. I saw the word "wrap-up" there at first, before the edit! :D I was about to refer you to this thread!
And yes, it DOES set a record. I *seriously* have been thinking all day, "man, I ought to get paid to do this".
Just wishful thinking, though! ;)

David, according to a review of Krippendorf's Tribe I read at Link Removed, it too is a MARred release, so you may want to note that in your list. What else should we have expected from a Disney catalog release in 2002?
The back of the case, BTW, lists it as being in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. Caveat emptor I guess.

Edited to fix a horrendous grammatical error. :b Grammar isn't this science major's forte.

Scott_J: the proof is, of course, in the pudding. I appreciate the link, and I will let everyone stand as fairly warned.
Here is the back of the box that SAYS it is anamorphic widescreen:

However, the review that Scott_J links to says this:
VIDEO: Disney continues to provide disapointing catalog releases, as "Krippendorf's Tribe" is listed as being presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen on the back cover - but isn't. Instead, often-nominated cinematographer Dean Cundey ("Jurassic Park", "Back to the Future", "Apollo 13")'s work is presented in pan & scan only.
Therefore, I'm removing it from the roundup. Thanks for the head's-up! I hope anyone who purchases it in error, returns it with an obvious advertising screw-up on the back. AND call's the 800 # to Disney and bitterly complains!

Thanks as always David. I always make sure to check your roundups every Sunday.

Even with all the movies out this week, I will only be picking up The Joy Luck Club. It is one of the movies my wife has been waiting for.

Superior job there David. I can see BestBuy grinning at the thought of how much money I'm going to drop on them.

Disney is getting bad with the packaging errors. I just noticed "Hocus Pocus" this weekend, where the specs list anamorphic widescreen, but at the bottom it says "this film has been modified to fit your screen." Didn't know which was right; left it on the shelf.
Thanks for the round-up, Dave. Unfortunately my car suffered a breakdown, so the mall will have to wait a couple days. :)

Dave--
Great job -- as always! :D
Looks like that BestBuy/Artisan deal is pretty good! $12.99 apiece for First Blood and Basic Instinct. Then, $5 off! Does anyone know if this Basic Instinct is the unrated version?
I like these BB deals. Took advantage of their Family/Disney DVD deal last week and their Action DVD deal at Memorial Day.
Sorry I got the date wrong on the RoundUp. I guess that's why "You da man!"

Disney is getting bad with the packaging errors. I just noticed "Hocus Pocus" this weekend, where the specs list anamorphic widescreen, but at the bottom it says "this film has been modified to fit your screen." Didn't know which was right; left it on the shelf.
I was planning to list this title, as Amazon ($14.99), Best Buy ($14.99), and Circuit City ($17.99) all listed it on their sites as a 6/4 release.
However, when I dug a bit deeper trying to find out if it is OAR or not, I was sure it wasn't actually coming because DVDEmpire didn't list it at all, Image-Entertainment said "TBA", DVDPlanet didn't have a date either, Borders showed it as being released in 1999 and having a price of $29.99  , FYE also said 1999 but with a lower price ($17.99), Tower Records just says "Advance Order", and the site of a local chain claims "In Production".
This is the sort of thing that drove me crazy today, and ended up helping to delay a post that was gonna take forever due to it's size anyway. So, with a 7-to-3 verdict, I decided Hocus Pocus just wasn't coming this week after all.
Now I just checked both the DisneyDVD site and LukeB's site as well (the latter is more reliable, natch). Both say 6/4 for this title. Plus, Mike has actually seen it with his own eyes. :)
So expect it Tuesday. I have no idea if it is OAR or MAR, except that LukeB's site shows it as 1.85:1. I guess you can count me in for that title, too! ;)
LukeB responded to me about a half-hour ago on Mr. Wrong and had to confess that he doesn't know if it is truly OAR or MAR, other than going on Disney's admittedly not-always-accurate site info. Since noone is screaming for info about this title, I won't worry about it either way.
Thanks, Mike, for bringing up HP. Thank you LukeB, for all of your contributions today on the Disney titles! NO OAR = NO SALE!

The ad for Basic Instinct shows it as the Unrated cut, but I have not gone and taken a look in store yet, I will let you know what I find out after I go to BB Tomorrow.

As for that Wal-Mart DVD player.... check this thread...
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf...&threadid=72828
It is sold out.... but the MSRP is about $230 or so (supposedly).
Jim
Sounds interesting, Jim, that this is backordered so quickly. I bet they had about as many of these available as CompUSA did Harry Potter! :D
When you get your toy, let us all here know if it's worth a darn.
About the similarity of the Apex portable models to the Audiovox models...I'm not too surprised. Often companies "outsource" their projects. In other words, that big-brand-name laptop computer might not be made by the same company whose name is on the label. That cellphone might be done by some "nameless" company who makes the phones for five different major brands. It might not be a coincidence that the batteries are all compatible with a very wide range of cordless phones, y'know. The electronics industry is more incestuous than any of you probably realize!

Dave, this one's got to be a record of sorts ;), is this getting to be a full time job ? I always thought this section should be renamed as the Dave Lambert Memorial :D .
It's totally beyond me that Columbia/TriStar would do a MAR of Midnight Clearing. It was a wonderful but niche picture, so I guess the real bad news is the move to MAR is no longer limited to just the big and popular movies.

Great update as usual.

I am going to pick up American History X. The cheapest I have seen it for is $14.95 at Target. Has anyone seen it cheaper at a B&M since the SRP reduction?

Dave, did you by chance happen to see Walmart's price?
