I just gave Waterworld a whirl and sampled a number of scenes to get a feel for the picture quality. Well, some of the optical effects are somewhat dated and tend to be where dirt is most apparent. The image is fairly sharp and does have some of that 3-D pop that we have come to expect. My affection for this film has grown over the years so I am gonna be a bit gentle and say that I was somewhat pleased but not overwhelmed by what I have seen of this transfer.

I have not seen this transfer nor ordered this HD-DVD.

I do want to comment on something....

This conversation could have very well taken place in
another recent thread concerning another Universal title
that also was cited as having "less than desirable" image
quality on HD-DVD.

I want to make sure that those of us who complain about
such things are not attacking the transfer itself, but rather
our impressions of how this film looks on a higher definition
format that magnifies any imperfections in the way the film
may have looked theatrically.

Don't HATE the format.
HATE the source!
;-)
Would like to hear (ha, ha) how the sound compares to the DTS SD DVD.

As far as I can tell this is the same version that Universal released on standard DVD. It clocks in at 136 min which is the same as the SD DVD. I didn't watch the whole movie but maybe someone else knows. There are no extras. By the way Darren, I also wish Warner (I think they hold the distribution rights) would get around to releasing "Night of Dark Shadows" as well as "House of Dark Shadows." Barnabas Collins is my second favorite blood-sucker. People have been asking for those titles for a number of years.

Seems the same to me too...right down to the lack of an lfe channel!!

Looks great, despite dirt in scenes.

Everyone says that Waterworld didn't have a LFE channel. I could have sworn that my dts dvd had a 5.1 signal to the receiver.

I should check that out.

Thanks, Aaron. Your support and enthusiasm are much appreciated!

They're terrific films and a DVD release would really open them to an entirely new generation.
