Mark,
There is no "magic time" where a switch was flicked and eveything went from 1.37:1 to 1.85:1. Through the 50s and even into the early 60s there were theatrical films produced in 1.37:1. I cannot say what the OAR for "The Prince and the Showgirl" should be, but 1.37:1 is possible. I have never seen original materials or production documents for this film and have not heard from anyone else who has. In the case of "Anatomy of a Murder", Columbia has released it on DVD in Europe in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and in the US and Canada in 4:3. One of them is clearly not the OAR. Again, I have no proof of which is right, but I have my suspicions.
Regards,
