I don't know if I'd call it "major". The show has taken TONS of detours up to now. Yes, this was a change...but, Lori would have eventually died anyhow. I think they are simplifying numbers for an upcoming event...

It might be hard to believe but in my opinion, it's toned down from the comics. The events surrounding Lori's death in the comics (events which I don't want to mention because it's a likely spoiler for the TV show) would have been too horrendous for TV. If they had just adapted the comic book to live action, I think it would have been too much for alot of viewers. I'm not saying that they're holding back either because I think it was the right call- seeing something terrible in a comic book is rough but seeing it portrayed by actual people would have probably even grossed out a jaded gorehound like myself.

Hmm - Now I am going to need a PM with those details. I have not read the comics and while I wouldn't say never, do not see that actually happening.

What a textbook case of character motivations.
For the Rick half of the episode we totally get why he goes on a rampage and that half of the episode is stellar story telling. :tu:
For the Michonne half - we know nothing of where her head is at so her bout of zombie killing is totally gratuitous and almost pornographic no matter how cool the kills may seem. :td:
And apparently Carol is dead. Thanks for showing that clearly. T-Bone or Dawg or Puppy or whatever your name was - your sacrifice was in vain.
Plus the show is in danger of turning Andrea into the next Lori.
Daryl continues to kick ass and impress each installment.

I'm not sure what you were looking for leading up to that scene. I'd argue that Michonne is completely geared up for survival and she will put down any Walker in the vicinity as an (almost) conditioned response without needing a reason beyond the only good Walker is a brain-deprived Walker. Seems like a prudent characteristic in the Zombie Apocalypse even if the scene functioned as a showcase for her whup-ass skills with a katana. Admittedly, the only reason to free the Walkers is to probably get a little sword time in, as she could have easily pierced them through the door to their cell. Maybe she was pissed off at the Governor, Andrea and being there and decided to take it out on some Walkers. :)
The show continues to split my head wide open. Rick's rampage and the discovery of the bloated Walker. Wow! (I assume that everyone put together why the Walker would have a bloated belly.) Merle in Zombie Fight club. Awesome. And of course the cliffhanger ending.

Don't jump to any conclusions about Carol yet. I think they think she's dead, but they had no body to bury. When would they have had time to find the body and bring it out? There was no body for Lori either (it's in the stomach of that zombie that Rick fed a bullet). Seems like they dug graves for those they thought dead even if they had nothing to bury.

Yeah, Michonne thinks something sinister's going on, and finding a pen full of walkers confirms it. She wasn't going to leave them standing for that which they were intended, whatever that may be. My favorite little bit of acting in the episode was when Michonne mentions Penny and then says something like, "Yeah, she meant the same as all the other women." The look of understanding on the Gov's face, "Ah, she doesn't know about Penny at all," was tiny but really good.
I'm a little surprised by the phone. I wasn't expecting that to be brought over from the comic.

I think Carol is alive and hiding. Eventually she'll have to come out. Everyone seems to think that Daryl found Carols du-rag, but I thought it was TDogs shirt.
This was not only a turning point for Ricks descent to insanity, but as mentioned, learning that his actions have deathly serious repercussions. Those who've read the books know how badly some of his decisions come back to haunt him. We're finally getting into that from the comic. This season has been a real improvement of the previous 2.
The phone thing suprised me.

That phone ringing reminded me of some of the bizarre moments of LOST, like finding a bunker in the middle of the jungle on an island. Who could've been calling?
They're getting too comfortable with the CGI. Starting to look too cartoony.

It's a nice theory but the show has not established that. More scenes between Andrea and Michonne when they were on their own for 8 months was a missed opportunity to establish Michonne's character.
Also those walkers were caged so her kills required forethought.
As far as Carol, she is dead.
Confirmed in an interview with the showrunner from The Hollywood Reporter - http://tinyurl.com/aa94m9d
The relevant section is here -
Is Carol really dead? Did the group find her body? Lori's grave is still open as if they're going to stick her body in it. Daryl sticks a Cherokee Rose flower -- the same one that he gave to Carol when they were searching for Sophia.
That implies that they believe that she's dead. We would never do a thing where, "Oh, they found her body and they buried it and we didn't make that clear." They definitely have not found her body, but have very good reason to believe she's dead because everything has happened that she is in fact dead. Whether or not they are going to find her body or they're going to find a zombie Carol or they're going to find a Carol alive, that is definitely a storyline that we'll be dealing with moving forward.

I quite liked it. It wasn't as action-packed as previous ones, but it felt like it had more dramatic weight. The Andrea/Michonne plotline advanced a little further, we found out about The Governor's daughter, we saw just how fucked up Woodbury is in general, and even got an old-fashioned Lost-style WTF moment at the end. I'll take it.
I was amused that they dug three graves, and buried nothing in them. Also, we finally get to see Woodbury's zombie-arena (something fans of the comic book have long been waiting for), and Merle gets an awesome Gladiator-moment there.
(Also-also, Maggie gets the rare bit of Walking Dead-humor: "...I'm not putting that in my bag.")
Any one else get that the fat zombie Rick killed at the end was in the room where Lori died, and the reason it was so bloated and unable to move....was that it basically ate all that was left of Lori? I would have loved it if Rick had cut open the zombie, and fished out a license plate.

Overall I liked the episode but there are just those ridiculous TWD moments.
Digging 3 graves and then refilling them? Just so stupid.
Rick losing it, he is the leader of the group, and a police officer, but handled losing a loved one worse than anyone we have seen. The farmer daughters have lost more and they deal with it.
The Zombie eating Lori in like 20 minutes, this doesn't bother me really, more of an observation.
I want to see what the scientist is up to.

On "Talking Dead" last night, they had the director/co-exec producer for the episode, Greg Nicotero, on the show and he verified that was Lori who was consumed by the zombie, to the point of "meat coma" (my term), and if you look closely, there are strands of Lori's hair around the zombie's mouth and face area.

So how do we know that the buddha-bellied walker ate Lori? Why did Rick assume that? Did I miss a clue?

And I'm with Andrea on this...I don't care if someone kept me alive for 8 months...I'm staying in the commune. I'll put up with the strange "Ring of Walkers" cage matches and even risk the fact that the mysterious leader might want to make zombie meat out of me. Give me the cold drinks and a bed to sleep in.
