Been a while since I posted here, but this place has always been a great help when I needed it.

My question has to do with Virtual Surround systems. I'm about to move into a new apartment and planning to splurge a bit on (what most would consider here) a basic home theater set-up.

The TV I'm thinking of getting is the Panasonic TH-42PX60U:

(any recommendations for HDTVs 1500 and under are welcome)

As for the sound system, I'm trying to avoid the full 5.1 speaker set seeing as though the living room isn't all that big and since I'm renting I want to avoid running cables around my hardwood floor or drilling rear speakers into concrete walls. The simpler the better.

So I've come across these single speaker virtual surround sets like the Niro systems,

and the Yamaha YSP-800 (the 1100 is a bit beyond my price range)

Anybody here try these out? The Niro is pricier but comes with a subwoffer. Given the floorplan, (see attachment) will the open spaces negate the speaker's desired effect? (The TV would be set up against the wall separating the living room from the master bedroom)

    Thanks in advance.
